In the brown ale category, this malty beauty shows its local spirit with a distinctive maroon tint. With an intricate balance of both chocolate and caramel malts and an abundance of premium hops, this beer is extremely complex with a very smooth aftertaste.

Draft at the brewery. Pours clear copper brown with a fizzy white head. Tastes like bitter nutty hops, very roasted malt, toast, a little earthy. Light body and low carbonation. Faint nutty hop aroma.

Tap at brewpub. Pours clear copper/brown with creamy off-white head. Aroma is toasted and bready malts, caramel, light nuttiness, and some faint earthy notes. Flavor is smooth and malty with a touch of caramel sweetness, light hops, and a dry, nutty finish. Light/medium body and medium carbonation.

[ Tap ][ Bull & Bones Blacksburg ][ 5oz ][ Mini Imperial Pint ][ $1.50 ][ 2/9/14 ]
>> Clear amber pour with good lacing. Nose is caramel, no off flavors like some of the others on tap. Taste is bitter, not chemically harsh like its brethren, lots of red apple though. Bitter palate with lemon water, tannic red apple. Eh.

Sampled during CBC 2013. Maroon brown pour (see what I did there?) with a small tan head. Light aroma of chocolate, nuttiness, and hint of earthiness. Light chocolate flavor, nutty, malt bitterness. Not bad.

Draft. A nice attempt to get a brown ale with a reddish hue. Ends up a little thin. Nothing to run from, but I’ll look for other options on my next trip.

This was tasted at The Camel in Richmond. August is beer month across Virginia. Local beers were featured at the best bars in town. The head was a tan color and quickly disappeared. The beer poured a deep brown that is attractively clear. Your nose picks up coffee and toffee. There is also a hint of tobacco detected. Active carbonation with no lacing. There is a strange astringent taste at the finish.

Clear light brown with a thin off-white head. Soft malt aroma. The flavor is light malt sweetness but it leaves you wanting more. Thin bodied; weak.
