2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Aubrey (3192) - Bellingham, USA - FEB 22, 2006
Draft at brewery: Deep, dark burgundy; somewhat cloudy. Mouthfeel was syrupy and soft, with hardly any carbonation to speak of. Super-sweet malts, with multi-grained crust flavors and aromatic toast. Residual sticky sweetness. Some slight Belgian-esque esters, but they seemed a little restrained. Bitterness was light. Drinkable, but this one didn’t do much for me.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 adnielsen (3755) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - AUG 30, 2011
On tap @ brewpub. Dark brown appearance with a creamy, brown head. Chocolate, nutty, caramel, turtle bar, spicy belgian nose. Dark chocolate, licorice, caramel, somewhat spicy, dark fruity flavor. Slightly boozy. Sweet, slightly syrupy, dessert finish.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 notalush (3742) - Denver, Colorado, USA - AUG 28, 2011
Draft at the brewery - dark reddish brown - sticky lace - nose of toffee, caramel, raisin, date, peat, moderate oxidation and light phenols - flavor is initially a bit tart and lightly oxidized - moderate sweet chocolate and toffee - raisin and cherry - tail end is a bit spicy, with some earthy, fruit skin bitterness - slightly off bitterness (aspirin) in the finish, but otherwise decent - this was tapped as a part of their 40th anniversary celebration, so I think they have been sitting on this keg for a while - the amount of oxidation would seem to place this a a few years old.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Ernest (5183) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - SEP 4, 2006
Draught at the brewery.
Head is mostly diminishing.
Body is medium brown.
Aroma is moderately malty (cookie, caramel), with notes of peat/whiskey, bubble gum, brown sugar, toffee.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation.
Oddly enough, the aroma reminded me more of a Scotch ale than a Belgian. But either way, it’s a decent enough beer for its size.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Ratman197 (5916) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - MAR 5, 2006
On tap @ Bull and Bush poured a clear reddish copper with a lasting amber head. Aromas of brown sugar, dark fruit and a hint of spice. Palate was medium bodied and dry. Flavors of toffee, spices and a hint of chocolate with a smooth finish. A decent beer, but not what I think of as a triple.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 alaskanwarren (286) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - FEB 22, 2006
Mahogany color with creamy head. Really rich creamy feel to the palate. The aroma is caramel and toffee. So is the taste. Also a bit of a smokey, toasted aroma too. Hints of esters I thought this was an interesting beer, and I did enjoy it, but it was hard for me to think of it as tripel. I just didn’t get those citrusy and estery vibes that I usually feel from a tripel. Maybe I need to do more research on what an Imperial tripel really is, but my brain and palate didn’t get along in this one.
