COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our ESB is brewed with traditional ale malts and hops. Representing just one of the steps on the Pale Ale ladder from Ordinary Bitter to IPA, our version is traditional in the UK style with lower carbonation, floral hop aromas, a toasty biscuity quality and a balanced hop bitterness. The body is appropriately medium in weight and texture. The name comes from Durham’s historic Bennet Place, where they signed surrender papers for Southern armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. It was the largest troop surrender of the American Civil War. HOPS USED: Northern Brewer, FUggles

On tap at the brewpub. Pours medium amber-copper with a beige head. Nose is sweet-biscuity with some citrus and mild hop bitterness. The flavor has some sweetness, but is pleasantly delicate. Great session beer.

On tap at BCBB, Durham. Very nice deep orange pour, quite clean looking and with a sizable foamy head. Fuggle-icious nose, with some fruit and bright malts. Body a bit watery but the flavor I found quite pleasant, with its mix of vibrant fruits and dry hops on the back end.

Draught at the brewery. Medium amber with a moderate white head. Nice balance between hoppy/bitter and malt/sweeter flavors. A little on the tart side, again lending to the English-style beers I have become accustomed to trying in the states and especially from this brewery.

Draught at the brewery. Pours soft clean orange amber with one finger of sandstone tan head. Nose is super biscuity and toasty with a nice citric and herbal hop character and mild malt sweetness. Bready and biscuity flavor, big on the toasted grain and biscuity character. Hop character is initially very herbal and earthy and then gives way to some very nice and delicate citric and floral notes. Nice and dry finish with an upfront bitterness and light body.
