The Scotch Ale or "Wee Heavy" style is a malt driven beer often with a little residual sweetness and soft peat smoke character. This is truly like liquid Scotch, but pre-distillation. Revealing a higher alcohol content, the rich caramelized sugars give this style a brownish copper color balanced by very lighthop bitterness. We asked Sneaky Peat to help us with sourcing real imported peat bog to smoke the malt for this beer. Peat has a completely different smoke character than hickory or applewood and helps make this beer genuine in character and style. We are proud to present Boggan’s Wee Heavy named after Patrick Boggan’s "ordinary" established at around 1749 in Snow Hill Plantation. His inn provided a meal and hospitality at the intersection of two trading paths in North Durham. Hops used Perle, Goldings

On tap at BCBB, Durham. Vibrant hues on this pour, amber and crimson streaked together. Soft medium head. Nose is pretty inviting, toffee, peat, and char along with a mild fruitiness. Body is a bit oily, but nothing unpleasant. Flavors are pretty aggressive, so peaty that in places it seemed halfway to a rauchbier. But for the most part well balanced and enjoyable.

Soft vivid ruby orange with one finger of sandstone tan head. Nose shows a touch of peat and burnt sugar, herbal hop quality. Toasted grain and a touch of sweetness. Spicy alcohol an some peat smoke showing through. Medium body with a slickness that reminds me of fruit skins.

Tapat the brewpub. Clear deep amber to brown pour. Weaker head. Sure rich malty nose with maple and toffee. Some butter. Taste is spicy, wood, smoky like actual Islay Scotch whiskey. Actually quite good. Tangy, spicy, malty. Muted peat works well. Not aggressive. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pint at brewpub. Good aroma, sweet, molasses, raisin, peat. Brownish orange color, good head and lace. Sweet flavor. Medium body, oily creamy mouthfeel, sweet finish. Good, big on the peat. Nice mouthfeel. Classic.
