3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 durhambeer (2396) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - OCT 14, 2012
On draught at BCBB. Pours dark brown, nearly black with a small tan head. Nose of sweet malts, milk chocolate, coffee, some lacto notes. Taste adds sweetness. A simple sweet stout but nothing wrong with that. Easy drinking.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 JCB (3798) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - OCT 13, 2012
On tap at the brewpub, Durham. Medium brown pour, not as hefty or substantial looking as I expect from this style. Nose somewhat less dry and roasty than I prefer too, almost like a beefed up brown more than a stout. But while it was predictably thinnish in mouthfeel, the flavors were more promising than the aroma, with healthier roasts and deep chocolate, along with a touch of grit on the finish. Redeemed, barely.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 maxwelldeux (2220) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - OCT 7, 2012
Draught in a flight at the brewpub. Poured a dark brown with a small head to it. I found it to be smooth and light, though not extremely flavorful for the style. Nice little hints of sweetness to it, but not much else.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 DiarmaidBHK (2274) - Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 12, 2012
Draft at brewpub. Pours black with a thin khaki head that leaves no lacing. A hint of roasted malt on the nose. I’m not getting a ton of lactose on the tongue and only a hint of the malt. Eh!
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 emacgee (3433) - Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA - SEP 7, 2012
Sampled at the brewery. Pours coppery brown, sitting near black. Nose shows a nice roast and graham cracker character. Light sweetness and diacetyl with some fruit skins showing through. Reminds me of homebrewed stouts. Lacks the structure I look for in a stout (if that makes sense....). Hard to put my finger on what it was but this one didn’t do it for me.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 TURDFERGUSON (3565) - Carrboro, North Carolina, USA - AUG 31, 2012
Tap at Bull City. Dark brown with medium sized tan head. Nose is light cocoa, roast, coffee, a bit nutty. More chocolate, coffee, roast, in the flavor, pretty thin bodied and easy drinking. Would like to come back for another pint.
