COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This past August we held a homebrew competition to select a winning beer with the promise of brewing a full scale commercial batch. Sixty six sample bottles later, the judges picked Phillip’s Black IPA as this year’s winning entry. We gathered the ingredients, and brewed the batch on our system. Truth be told Phillip gave us permission to substitute two of his hop varieties due to the hop market being sold out of his choices. We think he’ll be proud to taste this version. Very similar in style to his original recipe and one for the hop heads. The dark color comes from using a specialty malt called Black Prinz, which adds color but not a lot of roasty flavor. Expect a very hoppy, higher alcohol almost Double IPA, but dark in color. Showing citrus galore with bright floral hop aromas and a malty body that won’t quit. HOPS USED: Nugget, Zythos

Draft at the brewpub. Pours a dark brown, clear and with a small head. Nose of citrus, chocolate, mild pine and some moderate roast. Well balanced unlike many in this style--not overpowering yet still plenty flavorful. I really enjoyed this one.

Pint at Brewpub. Ok aroma. Some citrus, but not what I’d call galore, roasty malts, but lite. Dark Orangy brown color. Ok head minor lace. Bittersweet flavor. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, bitterdry finish, Meh, guess I’ve been expecting bigger aroma, was mild, flavor perked up as warmed. It’s fine....but then again that comment can get you in trouble sometimes...

Draft at the brewery and a growler brought home. Deep black color, creamy tan head, and a generally oily appearance with heavy lacing. Starts with a rich bitter chocolate taste, then the hops come in adding pepper and some pine. Even if I’m pissed (ok, not really) this beat out my black IPA submission, it is a well made and very well balanced black IPA.

Tap at the brewery. Dark pour with one finger of chestnut brown head. Piney and resinous aroma, lots of strong citrus zest and black coffee. Nice to try something using Zythos. Oily hop character in the flavor. Bitter black coffee and dark chocolate. Medium body with a heavy bitterness.

Worked on the Tower of Power with some friends from the neighborhood, and this is the beast we chose. Nice nitro pour too. Nice silky black body with a thick cafe au lait head and righteous lacing. Nose is certainly sharp, with more of an emphasis on roasted malts and molasses, with citrus rind and spice in the backseat. Velvety mouthfeel, just a touch sticky in places, but with a pleasant, consistent spice that livens things up when needed. Taste is quite good too, with a hint of licorice, dry spicy hops, and just enough citric tang.

Draught at the brewpub. Brownish amber with a light off-white head. Light roast, resin, pine, light citrus, light booze. Flavor is more boozy, brown sugar, pine. The alcohol is almost fusel and vodka-like. Not a fan.
