Our first batch of IPA brewed with a heavy hand of rye. The color is a hazy (un-filtered) copper-orange color with a light tan, creamy head. The body is very full due to that slippery, spicy, unctuous rye peeking through the malt. We love the richness, the Simcoe bitterness and the Mt. Hood soft flowery aromatics. The Simcoe bitterness is balanced and squeezes out between the malt and rye flavors. Is it hoppy, yet malty or malty, yet hoppy? You decide. Named after the Rattelade family grocery store which was located near the Ford dealership and American Tobacco Campus, the Rattelade’s sold beer and sandwiches in the back of the store and hand delivered groceries to the neighborhood. The Rattelade family still resides in Durham. Hops Used: Northern Brewer, Simcoe, Mt. Hood

From tap. Pours hazy orange to brown with a small off white head. Aroma is toasted malty, light caramelish to breadish. Sweet, toasted and caramelish malty. Bitter, toasted and slight fruity far finish.

Pint at Brewpub. Good aroma, sweet. Rye citrus, orange, grapefruit, flower. Tad hazed brownish orange color, ok head and lace. Bittersweet flavor. Medium body, light creamy mouthfeel, bitter sweet dry finish. It’s nice.nice set kind of ipa.

This beer had a very pretty pour, mango skin orange with one finger of sticky off white head. Very juicy nose, raw fruit and citrus flesh with a touch of pine resin and spice. Overripe fruit to a degree. Almost sweet with fruit, touch of grain, zesty/spicy and dry. A lasting bitterness with lightly grainy/bready notes on the finish. Alcohol starts to really show on the finish. This was nice.

On tap at BCBB, Durham. Nice pour, moderately cloudy orange with a big silken head. Nose was bright and fruity at first, then came across more like it had modest grain additions (generic farmhouse) than rye specifically. A bit too sticky tasting in places, and I’m not wholly persuaded by its base identity as an IPA. But it’s a decent effort and I liked it a bit more than Sam did.

Tap at the source. Cloudy amber with a small creamy white head. Nose shows some caramel malt, nice rye notes, light citrus, earthy hops. Flavor is similar, sweet and bitter. An interesting beer, tastes like It has Belgian yeast as their is a strong yeasty presence throughout the flavor. Okay.
