Black lagers, or Schwarzbier (black beer) as they are known in Germany, have a long and varied history. This dark lager started out as a German Ale in the Thuringia and Saxony regions in the mid-1500’s. It is often referred to as the stout of Germany; however, the style does not use dark roasted barley which gives a distinct British stout/porter character. Rather, this dark beer is crisp, clean, and non-roasty in style with a true lager essence. Revealing a smooth drinking body that won’t weigh you down, you can drink a toast to Bob Groves from the old Starlite drive-in movie theater in Durham. Everyone knew Bob and his friendly greeting at the gate. The Starlite opened in the mid-1940s, then closed down in 1961. In 1986 Bob took over and operated a concession stand/gun shop/movie rental store and flea market at the drive-in. The screen burned down in 2004 and the community helped raise funds to rebuild and open again in 2005. In March of 2007, Bob suddenly passed away and the Starlite theater was soon gone.

On tap at the source. Definite black color. Toasty and roasty malt with some caramel and a bittersweet finish.

Draft at the brewery. Black with a small tan head. Nose of charcoal and toast. Dark chocolate, some coffee grounds, and a touch of caramel make up the flavor profile. Short, sharp finish. Nice black lager.

Oh man, how I miss the drive-in theater this beer is named after. Many bad movies but many good beers consumed there. Where else can you buy popcorn, a pickle, and a gun in the same concession stand? Too bad Mr. Groves passed away... he’d always ask "how many you got in the trunk?" when you entered. Great place, sorely missed. Oh, wait... what? The beer? Oh yeah. Pretty good. Pours a clear medium-dark brown with a lightly foamy light beige head. Nose of moderate roast, chocolate, and a tad bit of licorice and molasses. Missing a bit of the char/light smoke that I like about the style, but still solid.

Draught at the brewpub. Dark brownish amber with lots of lace. Cocoa, roast, lightly nutty nose. Flavor lightly bitter, lightly sweet. Solid Schwarz.

Pints with the neighbors at the brewery. One of BCBB’s better offerings so far, to me. Nice full dark pour was handsome and the mouthfeel was full enough to pass for a nice sweet stout. But the nose gives it away pleasantly, with spicy hops, some char, and licorice. Taste runs more or less the same, with just a bit more of a pungent, herbal character that I dug. Goes well with the grub but damn solid on its own merits.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2011 Pours the color of burnt wood, clean with no haze. Head is one finger thick and light tan. Nose shows hints of roast and alight sweetness with some herbal hop notes and lightly toasted grain. Wish there was a little bit more to the flavor. Very light and thin on the mouthfeel, light astringency. Grassy hop charactre. Crisp carbonation,
