Summer is here and it’s Weiss season. Hooray! Light, crisp, tart and refreshing wheat beer is the brew to enjoy when the temperatures rise. Our Hefe Weiss is brewed with a real Bavarian German yeast strain yielding aromas of cloves, banana and other spices. This pale yellow, cloudy beer is the second in our series of wheat beer styles. Hefe is German for yeast and Weiss (Vice) means white, referring to the wheat used in brewing this style of beer. We named our Weiss after Viola Turner. Viola began her career at the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1920 as a humble, smart and spunky secretary. She eventually became the company’s treasurer and main connection to the larger financial world. In a bold move at that time, she was responsible for putting the company on Wall Street. She was the first woman to be appointed to the Board of Directors in 1960, as the Vice-President Treasurer. Hops Used: Mt. Hood

From tap. Pours hazy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is mild estery and slight herbal. Bubblegum and estery. Dry fruity and estery finish.

On tap at brewer. Cloudy yellow pour with a thick white head. Scent is citrus, clove and wheat. Taste is typical but balanced.

On tap at the brewpub, served in a nice longstem glass. Quite a handsome pour, a deep cloudy gold of the sort you expect from the style. Nose is inviting, with little of the perfunctory banana that sometimes mars American weissbiers and instead a ripe yeast complemented by a nice tartness. Mouthfeel was crisp and lively, and the taste full and well balanced. More of a malt presence to taste but appropriately understated. Dry hops and more medium tartness, a very nice one overall.

1 day old growler. An aggressive pour yields a tiny, quickly disappearing head. Soda-like bubbles are visible in the slightly cloudy straw yellow brew. Nice banana/clove nose. Initially tastes a little sour, then progresses to spices and hay notes. Leaves me wanting another sip.

This is actually one of my favorite Bull City beers to date. Pours a cloudy bright lemon rind yellow with one finger of creamy white head. Nose shows isoamyl acetate and raw sourdough upfront. Yeasty with a nice malt sweetness and touch of clove. Banana very well checked and balanced by spicy phenolics. Very very nice flavor, round and full malt profile with a touch of spice and lemongrass. A hint of acidity helps with the body. Medium weight, but dry and crisp. Boss-ome.

Draft at Bull City. Only wanted to try this beer and they will only do their samples for 3 or more beers so I was forced to order a pint. Did get a taste first to make sure I wasn’t throwing all my money away. Cloudy orange yellow, frothy white head. Nose is light clove, citrus, lemon. Flavor is similar, light banana, nicely balanced, not too sweet or spicy, thankfully. Not a style I particularly love but this was pretty well done and actually did me well on a very hot day in North Carolina.
