4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Hoffbrau0 (1) - - APR 4, 2012 does not count
Great beer. I love the Aroma is one of beer’s most complex features. Aroma is propelled by lively CO2 and dampened by pillowy heads - especially nitrogen foam. Click on a term below to add it to your tasting notes. It is the same beer every time.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 nuplastikk (3284) - Madison, Wisconsin, USA - DEC 13, 2011
Draft at OF. This is the kind of punishment you get for being a ticker. This beer sucks. Buttery, sugary malt tones. Medium bodied, totally unexceptional, bland crap. This is a 1.5 beer, anything more than that is generous. You cannot defend this beer. Harsh fruity ale notes. Really horribly brewed. Orange-amber crapaliciousness. Embarrassing.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 Ughsmash (6669) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - AUG 10, 2011
On tap at Bull Falls. Poured clear honeyed-orange with a short, sticky off-white head. The aroma had a bizarre sweet and sour interplay that I couldn’t place.. smelled off. The flavor found fruity and nutty notes at the core, with dry, kind of metallic sourness and yeasty notes around.. quick finish. Light-medium bodied and tangy on the palate.. odd flow that didn’t work.. something was wrong with this one.

Growler from Trig’s in Wausau. Amber wit a white head. Slightly sweet malty, bready aroma. Light sweetness with a touch of hop bitterness in the finish.
2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 JK (3966) - Uptown, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JAN 13, 2008
This one wasn’t so great. No perceivable hops on this beer and that is ok for the style. There is some sugar and dry malt, with a sort of grain-like character. Lacks complexity. More thanks to Skyview for this on.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BDR (2534) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - JAN 11, 2008
Thanks to Skyview for sharing. Sweet caramel aroma, and sweet body. Copper color with faint head. Smooth body.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 badgerben (4253) - Blaine, Minnesota, USA - JAN 10, 2008
Again, thanks to Skyview for the growler sample. Copper color with no head. Aroma of caramel and earthy English hops. Very dry malt taste along with a pinch of hops. Simple but not bad.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 Stine (1434) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - JAN 10, 2008
Poured from a growler. Murky rust. Honey apple, ctirus, canteloupe aroma; tangy and sharp. Flavor brings candied fruits and gumdrops, dough, and pistachio; violently sweet. Underfermented, sugary, and loose. Dry papery finish leaves a tasteless waxy coating. Inoffensive, though work is certainly needed.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20 Nuffield (3348) - Roseville, Minnesota, USA - JAN 9, 2008
I’m not exactly sure why, but I was less appreciative of this beer than their Oktoberfest; I definitely think this beer needs the attention of the proper serving temperature, because the flavor is a bit subdued, with malts that give you a sense of caramel, but like English-made equivalents often don’t give you enough dimensionality. The very subdued alcohol is a credit to the brewers, though the alcohol is what often drives the flavor profile the UK-made bottled English strong ales (and that’s not always a bad thing, as it can lift the aroma to you). The palate is a bit velvety, showing solid potential for this new brewer on the Midwest scene--good luck to them. Growler.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Skyview (5023) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - JAN 4, 2008
On draught at the brewery’s tap room and visitor’s lounge in Wausau, Wisconsin. Pours a semi-clear dark copper amber brew (slightly darker than the oktoberfest) with a thick, creamy off-white head that has some excellent retention and thick/spotty lacing. Served in a tulip style glass to allow this beer to come up to room temperature that has an aroma of sweet caramel malt, some candi sugar, light tropical fruitiness with a touch of toffee. Taste is medium bodied and light carbonation with flavors of a semi-sweeted caramel malt, some candi sugar, cotton candy and a touch of allspice. Finish is smooth, creamy, a slight alcohol warmth with a semi-sweet candy aftertaste at first and then a mild bitter finish. At first when served cold, the aroma and taste is light. Once the beer comes to room temperature the beer’s character really comes through.
