Lush and fruity, this "super saison" has been totally overhauled from the last two years. Previously, this beer has been lighter in color and ABV, but an increase in buckwheat honey has pushed the color into the dark amber range, providing a rich, layered complexity. The first sip leaves your mouth with a kiss of sweetness in an otherwise dry strong ale. 2006 version was Belgian Strong Ale and at 9%+ abv.

2008 version back to 7% abv, more in the traditional saison style - hazy golden in color.

Draft at Capone’s. Pours cloudy dull gold with creamy white head and great lacing. Nose is citric, pale malty, with some mild spicy, honey, and tangerine notes. Tastes on the sweet side, with pale malt, honey esters, mild spice, and mild orange marmaladey notes. Medium palate heft with decent complexity. Not nearly funky or assy enough to be considered a saison.

On tap at the brewpub. Very cold light salt nose. A bit of honey, malt and spice. Pours a hazy orange-gold, vibrant with a rim of whitish. Flavor is an interesting amalgam savory herbal flavors, fresh yeast, honey and almonds. Very bright and dry. Salty. This is nice. Quiet and reserved. A bit of alcohol brightens the backend. The flavors are nice. The beer is very quaffable. Peppery and floral. Long very faint grassy finish. Nice. Balanced, subtle.

Draft @ Bullfrog. Pours a hazy, orange-brown color; off-white head with patchy lacing. Lots of sweet honey, Belgian sugars, and very light spicing in the aroma; slightly more sweetness than I’d like to see from a saison. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy sweet malts, honey, and lots of white pepper and yeastiness; average carbonation; lots of sweet honeyed maltiness, but I’d prefer a lighter, funkier, more traditional rendition. Lengthy finish: toasty malts, honey, and light spicing (cloves, predominantly).

On tap at the brewery. Coriander, bubblegum, orange peels, light jasmine and some honey. Floral hops. Cloudy golden amber with thin off-white lacing head. Medium bodied with medium effervescent carbonation. Great flavor. Starts with wheat and honey, bubblegum and coriander. Orange blossom. Sweet throughout but not cloying. Dry yeasty finish with smooth chalky after. Nice saison.

BCTC 06 The pour reveals a cloudy brown color with a thin offwhite head. Aroma and flavor of honey and yeast. The body is light to medium with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Not bad but feels quite simple.

UPDATED: SEP 5, 2008 Draught at the brewery. Dark orange color, almost copper looking. Nose is pine, honey, clovers and some slightly burnt maple as well, overall very appealing in the nose. A bit of a peppery and active palate, a bit rough and bitter as well. The honey character is subdued, so it works fairly well in this beer. The saison qualities are a little hard to gather, though, other than the syrupy yeast, there’s a lack of spice and a lack of activity on the tongue, a lack of the mild sourness I like in other saison. Apparently the recipe has changed and the recent higher scores reflect the improved product.
