4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 auerbrau (2662) - Peace Dale, USA - SEP 27, 2009
On tap at the brewpub. Heaven in a glass. The aromatics of this beer blossom, with a thick, floral coconut, pineapple, and passionfruit, rich and tangy.
A musky, south Indian spice kicks in and backs up the fruit with an intoxicating perfume of rich spice character. Pours a thick, murky clouded dark golden, with a super-silky, slick off-white head. Flavor rockets full of musky sub-continental spices, mingled Hawaiian fruits, and a punch of pils malt and cobweb dryness. Balanced, expressive, and with such amazing, delightful fruity Brett character. Finishes super-dry. A beautiful, wonderful creation. I would rate this higher, save for a slight lick of ethyl acetate, tape-like plastic character that occasionally pops up as one digs into the beer. But, it’s an easily forgivable blemish.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 kramer (3455) - Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 21, 2009
Growler, from the brewery. Pours a clear dark gold body with a one finger fizzy white head that fades to a thin film. The nose is crazy bretty with some wheat, hay, light yeast, and some tropical fruits like mango and passion fruit. The flavor is all funked up as well. Tons of tropical fruit, a little sweet, if I didn’t know better I might guess that there might be mango in here. Finishes drier with some lingering brett and farmhouse funk. The mouthfeel is a little heavy for a Saison, especially up front, but it dries out a little more towards the finish. An improvement over the regular Busted Lawnmower, but still not phenomenal.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - OCT 25, 2009
Draft at the brewery. Pours a golden body with a light hazy white head. Funky leather like brett notes, mild provolone cheese, burlap sack, rope, and earth tones. Mild horse blanket with a hint of lemon. Great!
3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 MrChopin (2213) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - OCT 3, 2009
Draft at brewery. Tangerine gold with a fizzy white head. Nose is another fruity Bullfrog blend, heavy brett and saison notes with lemon, pineapple, berry, hay, and light urine. The flavor drops a bit and is dominated by an eggy brett note, also some lemon and hay with minor grass and biscuit. Quite a light body and a little watery, though still fizzy and refreshing. The brett is a bit strong, but this is another exciting blend from Bullfrog.
