This Bavarian Wheat beer combines the flavors of banana, clove, chocolate, caramel and figs into a deliciously dark and dry Dunkleweizen. No spices or fruits are actually used to create this beer, only barley malt, wheat malt, Hallertau hops and a funky wheat beer yeast from the world’s oldest brewery.

On tap, at brewery. Pours a very cloudy dark brown with a great looking one finger creamy beige head. Nice dark malts and hearty wheat on the nose with lots of yeast character, light coffee, roast, banana, and some light clove. The flavor is very rich and earthy with big chewy wheat and yeast. Great yeast character showing lots of spiciness and clove, long roasty coffee laced finish. Mouthfeel is full and thick with nice moderately fizzy prickly carbonation. Lingering finish. Overall, one of the best seasonal offerings in a while from Bullfrog.

Tap. Aroma of clove, light banana, sweet caramel malt with toffee. Flavor quite sweet with banana, dark fruits, bitter chocolate toward the finish, and an increasing charred nut presence. A bit on the sweet side, but not bad.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a small light tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, slight roasted malt, clove, and nuts. Flavor of sweet malt, fruits (raspberry), and nuts. A little too sweet for my liking.

Poured a hazy red brown color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of banana, nuts, clove, roast, toast, and a bit of cocoa. Taste of more nuts, roasted malts, brown sugar, cocoa, banana, and tart wheat. Thin mouthfeel.

Draft at some random bar in Northern PA. Pours deep brown, close to black, with a tiny beige head. The aroma is sweet and malty with banana and toast. The flavor is much the same, with banana, brown sugar, toast, and spice. Very nice.

Draft @ Bullfrog. Pours a dark, cola-brown color; creamy light-tan head with excellent, clinging, fine-bubbled lacing. Cola, wheatiness, and some bananas and cloves in the aroma; chewy without being sticky, some dark malts; slightly muted nose overall. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: bananas, cola, brown sugar (non-astringent), and toasty malts at the core; reasonably well-attenuated and dry overall; some husky wheat and pleasant creaminess throughout; a bit of lively citrus acidity, just a touch, at the perimeter; solid rendition overall. Medium finish: cola, toasty malts, and brown sugar; dry and slightly minerally end.
