As a lover of saisons I felt it necessary to brew its French counterpart, the Biere de Garde, full of luxurious richness with its aroma sweet to tart candy apples. The palette is full of expressive malt yet finishes dry and spicy with a note of tartness from the yeast.

Cloudy brown pour with tan head and lace. Light brown sugar aroma. Brown sugar and a light sour. Light/medium bodied with no carbonation. Very drinkable.

On tap, at brewpub. Pours a clear copper tinged amber body with a one finger frothy beige head that fell to a thin ring. Slightly grainy earthy malt dominates the nose with a lighter accent of farmhouse funk. A little bit of horseblanket and mushroom soil. The flavor is more funky than the nose though, it has an over-ripe mushroom note that doominates the farmhouse character. Some light yeast and dark malts. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, a little heavy for the style in my experience, with a slightly clingy finish. Overall this was decent, without any real flaws, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

750 shared by vferg. Pours a hazed honey amber- a bit muddy with a huge carbonation and a dirty yeasty big head. Aroma has a sharp sweet-tartness to it, with weird fruity esters esp as it warms- almost a grape and strawberry ester presence- with a muddled yeasty and dry crackery malts. Flavor is yeasty, phenolic, fruity, dough, dirty muddy yeast, toffee, light sweetness with a hint of tartness in the finish. A bit messy and really looks kinda bad next to the Haverhill BdG. This is a definite miss for Bullfrog.

750ml Bottle: Aroma of light tart fruit, light yeast, wheat bread crusts, grains, spices, cardamom, earth, slight citric acid, slight sour-apple, and slight fruit. Poured muddy brown in color with a large, loose, tan head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Very sparkling. Flavor is complex, lightly sweet, and slightly bitter. Tastes of dirty malts, light spices, yeast, slight sugary fruit candy, slight citric acid, slight mushroom, light hops, and slight wood. Light to medium body. Dry, slightly chalky texture. Lively carbonation makes my cheeks expand. Malt, grain, light hop finish is dry and slightly chalky. 7.2%ABV is completely hidden.

This poured a light cloudy brown color with an off white head. Aroma was light spices, some yeast and some maltiness too. Flavor was light floral hops, some tartness, light spices, and yeast. Interesting stuff.

Poured a hazy brown color with an off-white head. Mildly sweet aroma with spicy phenols hitting the nose. The flavor was sweet and malty with notes of yeast and phenolic pepper. Light to medium bodied.

Bottle shared at Moosetoberfest. Poured a honey amber with a thick large foamy mostly white head. Aroma was vinous with chardonnay notes, wood and apple cider. Full foamy bodied. Slight metallic notes on the initial flavor, grains and rust over top some white grapes and vinegar. I was rather underwhelmed by this and once again Bullfrog seems to be more Bullshit and hype then good brew.

Thanks JCB for sharing. Pours a murky caramel amber with a profuse fizzy tan head. Nose is sweet, acidic, yeasty, caramel, some fruit, definitely malt dominant. Flavor is tart and vinous, muscadines, malty, mildly astringent, some yeast, a bit of spice. Palate is dry with a some astringency.

750ml from Capone’s, Norristown. A very dark pour for a biere de garde, at least so it seemed (mighty gusher too). Huge chunks and tons of sediment enough for two beers. Ripe tart fruit in the nose, particularly getting hints of crabapple and so forth. Body’s a bit thin, something a bit medicinal in there too. Not bad.
