3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 3fourths (7063) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - AUG 18, 2009
Eggy, sulfuric, goaty and fatty first sniff. Looking deeper there’s an abundance of candy sugar and dusty gelatinous sugars, i.e. dirty/old gummi bears and fruit jello. Nose has a musk throughout, what I would otherwise call funky but with no positive connotation. Saccharine and overly sweet candies greet the mouth - candied tropical fruits, close to or resembling pineapple, mango, peach, but with a nutrisweet twang. Body is chewy, oily and especially syrupy throughout. Finishes with hints of aspirin, candied fruit and nutrisweet. Too sweet, too artificial. Does have a beautifully formed fine-bubbled white head on top of a hazed glowing gold body.

Big thanks to Kramer for sharing this at BCTC 2009. Pours hazy golden, capped with a moderate sized off white head. Very enticing aroma, with lemon zest, wild yeast, tropical fruit and some wheat. Flavor follows suit; nice bretty character with notes of lemon, horseblanket, wood, green apple, wheat, and a little acetic acid. This is probably my favorite bottled Bullfrog thus far.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 PilsnerPeter (3019) - Flushing, New York, USA - AUG 10, 2009
Bottle at BCTC 2009: Thanks Kramer: Hazy golden with a white film of head. Great bright bretty aroma- citric lemony, farmhouse rustic character and leather. Crisp body with a nice citric acidity in the flavor. Lemon rind, farmhouse funk, a touch of horse blanket- a nice acidic and bacteria ridden brett strain. Good stuff.

Bottle shared by Kramer at BCTC. Another nice golden sour here. Very dry overall compared to the other bullfrogs I tasted. I didnt take notes and I don’t really care about the numbers, just wanted a record of trying this beer. Thanks Jason.

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2009 One of the awesomely cool hookups from kramer @ BCTC’09. Color is completely cloudy, dark, murky golden. Aroma is some nail polish and light aceto-cherry sour. Flavor is much better with less of that assertive acetone and a nice lemon sourness with nice yeasty fruitiness behind it.7/3/8/3/15
Re-rate, this time shared by Levi, thanks. This was more of a grapefruit type of a sour. Got no nail polish this time. The aroma was full of funky grapefruit with light lemony bursts. Flavor was a bit flatter, less bright. Not really sour, just more of a funky-citrus character. Will keep this as the rating. 8/3/7/3/16.

[BCTC 09] Hazy, dark golden color with a medium sized white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of lemon skins, wild yeast, tropical fruit, citrus, vanilla, toast, and white grapes. Taste of pineapple, some citrus, white grapes, light apple, vanilla, oaky wood, and a sour finish. Pretty well balanced, with crisp acidity... Thanks Jason!

750ml bottle from cpferris...pours medium hazy orange brown with a thin bubbly white head...aroma of must and tart-like fruit (pears, etc.), light wood....sharp acidic fruit and slight vinegar. pretty effervescent with lively carbonation. nice but the previously had castleton had a little more complexity.

Stratford tasting @ Cletus house. Wow some real home run ratings here. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Brett y woody some lighter lemon and citrus character, dry with a light woodiness. Nice brew, but nothing crazy.

Bottle shared by a remarkably generous guy at the Cuvee de Castleton release at Captain Lawrence. This was definitely one of those right place at the right time sort of thing and I’m delighted that I got to try this. Pours a murky light brown (and my pour was from near the top, so it’s not like I was getting dregs). This was by far the best smelling beer of the day. Bretty, sweet summer strawberries, straw, wood. Absolutely gorgeous aroma (and yes, once I reluctantly finished my pour I sat around sniffing the glass for a few minutes). Thin to medium bodied. Very soft, and lighter than I had expected given the aromas. Light strawberry and vanilla, and a touch of sweetness. Very refined. Certainly lives up to the hype.
