Has a nice roasted malted quality on the nose. Pours a very dark brown with a thin light brown head. Some biscuit quality on the tongue along with the caramel. Finishes dry which is nice but it has a very thin mouthfeel. I wish this one had more substance to it.
4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Thorpe429 (4844) - , Illinois, USA - NOV 30, 2010
A: Very dark brown, bordering black, with a thin tan head that stays most of the way down.
S: Lots of smoke and a bit of a dried meat odor to it. Very nice with a bit of dark chocolate backing behind the meat and roasted malt.
T: Good amount of smoke, but becomes a little excessive compared to the other flavors. Nice, but not balanced quite perfectly.
M: Moderate body and a different sort of dryness from the smoke. Enjoyable.
D: Definitely drinkable for a smoked beer, but not something that’d be uber-sessionable.
Serving type: on-tap

On tap at the brewpub 6/8/08: Pours a nearly opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a stringy-lacing dark beige head. Aroma of rich smoky dark caramel malts and a touch of doughy grain. Body starts with good fullness and sweet smoky caramel notes balanced with a touch of hoppy bitterness before the drier smoky finish. A nice smoked porter.
