COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Special.
Baltic (or Russian) stouts were brewed for export to Russia and the Baltic states, where they were popular in the late 1800’s after strong English dark ale found favour with Catherine the Great of Russia. They were especially high strength (8-11% abv) to avoid freezing in the low temperatures encountered during the winter months. Whilst ours has never actually been anywhere near the Baltic sea, it is introduced (by virtue of our unique location as the first high point encountered by Siberian winds when they blow this way) to Baltic air. And we brew it around the anniversary of the Russian ’kerfuffle’ of 1917 that saw the trade in such beer die out (sort of). Brewed with dark barley, rye and wheat malts, and heavily hopped (with Chinook, amongst others). This is a beer packed with the right sort of flavours, and is therefore somewhat drinkable. (Because of Nanny State beer duty changes, this beer may go down in strength for the 2011 brew. Sorry, but I think we all give enough money to the state already. And all to pay for the idiocy of a few. But mostly to pay for a few more idiots to have a job...)

Cask at the Pembury Tavern, London on 4th February 2011. Black with small thin, dying head. Roast malt, burnt toast, bitter chocolate, oats, alcohol and rather delicate hints of vanilla. Thick mouthfeel, very dry finish with rear-mouth bitterness.

Cask, gravity, at Luton Beer Festival ’11. Very dark brown, near black. Sweet toilet cleaner aroma, better than it sounds. Sweet rounded malty taste full of oats, ash and leather. Sharp bitter finish.
