When not working hard producing Burleigh Brewing’s regular line-up of beers, our brew team dabbles in ‘A Bit on the Side’. And inspiration was abundant for this latest brew. Filtered through local lava rock, My Wife’s Bitter is our coastal interpretation of a classic English bitter, with roasted maltiness, a soft caramel character and dense, aromatic foam. Whats in in? Authentic English hops (Fruggles & East Kent Goldings), a blend of classic English speciality malts (crystal & chocolate), a centuries-old English yeast, beautiful Gold Coast water and the passionate commitment od our entire team. What’s NOT in it? Preservatives, additives, nasty chemicals, foam enhancers, pre-isomerised hop products, animal products, finings, GMO’s...or anything else that is not meant to be in beer.

Grassy aroma in a copper pour. Unexpectedly laid back hop balance leaves little hint of he bitter - but plenty of the malt.

On tap at Burleigh Brewing, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out bitter English hops upfront, with a thin biscuity malt backbone. Flavour is dry, with astringent English hops and metallic notes. Not very pleasant nor easy drinking.

Bottle 0,33l. Pours clear amber colour with a sparse and short-lived head. Toasty and malty aroma, a little grass and wood, and a hint of metal. Same for taste with hints of chocolate and malts. Mild sweetness, low bitterness. Light-Medium body, soft carbonation, fairly short finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle. Good beer. Mild bitterness giving a crispness to the finish. Happy to take to a BBQ. Clever name too (apparently it is his Wife’s bitter recipe and she named it).

UPDATED: OCT 9, 2015 Curious aroma and taste that started out as musty and grew to a stale smoke. Matched well with the toasted grain. Some dried fruit taste present, but overwhelmed by the toffee and toast. Oddly easy to drink for its harsher flavours.

Pours a clear reddish brown copper with little to no head. Aroma is very much malt with trace hints of dark stone fruits, a little bread. Flavour is up front malt with subtle hints of raisins. A dry finish with hint of coffee bitterness.

330ml into pint glass. Malty liquorice chocolate nose. Deep amber with creamy white head. Quite fizzy for a bitter. Beautiful unusual hop character, creamy, bitter, liquorice again. Really nice.

Rusty amber in color. Sweet malt, light hop bitterness, a bit earthy. Medium bitterness overall with a solid malt backbone. Decent.

Bottle to glass at Jak and Hill, Brisbane. Dark copper brown, tiny head. Smells of malt, brown bread and boot polish. Medium body, sedate carbonation. Had a kind of astringent hop finish, which I rather liked once I got used to. Not hugely bitter, but a nice version of one.
