Burnside Permafrost is Burnside Brewing Co.’s first winter elixir. It’s a big strong ale brewed with 7 different malts and copious amounts of Columbia and Amarillo hops pillowed in the middle to give this warming brew a chewy complex malt body and a unique fruity juicy hoppiness throughout. You won’t want to sip this dangerously strong and tasty beer like you should but pound it.

22. Pours a murky dark brown with a loose sudsy tan ring. Light sudsy lace. Big malty iced tea nose, blended with roasty brown bread notes and a little bit of faint citric floral complement. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Toasty dark brown bread mid palate with a little bit of floral counterpoint. Long brown bread iced tea finish.

Draught at the brewery restaurant during Zwickelmania 2014. Good strong caramel nose, with honey and some dark fruit. Very pretty sparkling garnet red color, good lace. Very sweet initial: raisins and some sour fruit in the background / pleasant sweetness in mid, generous carbonation, and some substantial bittering / mild sweet finish. Medium-heavy body. One of the more interesting brews I’ve had from Burnside. Served a bit too cold.

On tap at Bailey’s Taproom while the ladies shopped across the street at Billygoat Vintage - pretty good deal as far as I was concerned. Hazy copper with a tan head. A fair amount of caramel and semi-roasted malts, some orange and what I can best describe as semi caramelized/burnt grapefruit rind. Moderate body and carbonation, smooth and easy to drink but most going on upfront then later on - still good though.

22 oz bottle bought from "Roth’s Sunnyslope Market" in South Salem. $5.49 Pours a hazy darker amber colour with a nice sized cream coloured head. Very appetizing malty aromas (if that’s your thing) coffee,semi-sweet chocolate, figs, raisins come to mind..fruity hops. Taste similar to aroma a bit more sweet though! nice dark chocolate bitter aftertaste. Nice enough mouth feel medium to ow carbonation but its smooth enough over the tongue. Touch of alcohol warmth in the very end. I actually liked this one quite a bit..its a sipper though.

Though L.A. is in zero need for a winter warmer, I really wanted to try the NW version from Burnside Brewing, and Permafrost pours a hazy and muddled dark orange color. First sip is effervescent but soon settles into a heartier ale. The aroma is dark citrus with malt notes. A bright hit of alcohol also pops in and out. A dark bitterness takes root at the end.
