COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Special (Gold Medal Ale series) - September 2009.

Gold Medal Ales are produced monthly in recognition of some of the ’greats’ of history. This month’s story :-
There are two versions of why the bell of Westminster is called Big Ben. The most likely one is that it was named after the then current bare-knuckle champion boxer Ben Caunt. Big Ben himself stood 6’ 2” and scaled 17 stone. His namesake stands 7’ 6” and weighs in at over 13 tons. In September 1859, two months after going into service, it cracked, but a lighter hammer was fitted with the crack turned away from it so that it could once more ring out with the distinctive off pitch note that persists to this day.

Colour: Rich Amber
Nose: Beery with a pronouced hop
Taste: A balanced maltiness with hoppy bitterness
Hops: Target, Challenger, Northdown & Stryian Goldings

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham (21-Sept-09). Copper with a short head. Clear. Hoppy scent. Thin and very bitter. Very hoppy, perhaps too hoppy, with some grass. Very dry. A very good bitter, though.

Cask in the new wheatshef. Alround rating: Pale honey and light caramel malt, minerally herbal character, the water and hop blending clearly. Its balanced but noteably unexciting if drinkable.
