UPDATED: JUN 8, 2008 Sept, 2002. Bottle Conditioned. I found this to be an awesome world class ale. I loved the minimalist label and name; nothing silly like Old Belcher, just saying what it is - a porter brewed in Burton. No strange pictures or cartoons, just the bare facts and one simple instruction: serve cool and pour gently. This is a beer that is going to let the taste do the talking. (It looks like in America they give you a cartoon label!) A very lively opening produced a large head which, to be honest, is not to my liking - the head gets in the way of the drink! On putting the drink to my lips I found I had consumed almost half of it in one go - extremely freshing, easy to drink, smooth and moreish. Heavenly! At this point I was stunned and quite excited. Without a doubt an awesome beer. Not complex with lots of twists and turns to examine, but a beer that does exactly what it says on the tin - refreshes and delights with a perfect balance of the classic ale ingedients. The Rio Ferdinand of beers. As a note of interest I drank this one month AFTER the best before date. Get some and lay it down. [4.5]
Dec 2003 Bottle Conditioned. BBE Sept 2003. I had this next to Burton Bridge Christmas Porter. The regular porter came out on top, but that was more to do with the age than the recipe. Also, I wasn’t as overwhelmed with the regular porter at 3 months after the BBE date as I was when it was one month after BBE. [4.1] Bottle Conditioned. From Bottles, London. BBE April 2004. Named Christmas Porter. I compared this with an aged Burton Porter. The first difference is that the regular (aged) porter has a thin lasting head that gathers in interesting pockets, while the young Santa’s head vanishes completely; the next difference is that the aged porter is much much darker - a deep, almost black ruby colour, while the young Santa is a murky brown/red (the yeast went straight in because it foamed up on opening). Both have the pleasant acidic aroma that is a feature of the best porters. But the aged porter has extra elements, a creaminess, a fresh fruit and dripping blood quality that lifts it into the awesome realm. The young Santa is pleasant, the aged regular is awesome. Flavours are muted in the Santa - nice fruit with a refreshing sour fruit finish touched with chocolate - good, but nothing special. The aged is alive and buzzing with flavours. The profiles are similar, just that the aged regular is more intense yet more mellow at the same time, fresher tasting, better balanced with the individual flavours more pronounced yet more integrated - just all round better quality. It is clear which is the better drink - and that is simply due to different aging. [3.2]
June, 2008Cask at Burton Bridge Inn, the brewery tap. This was one of the beers I got excited about in my early days of beer-hunting. Subsequent tastings have not lived up to that initial excitement. I shared some of haddonsman’s pint at the brewery tap and was very disappointed. It seemed to be lacking in weight, flavour and character. Quite refreshing and easy to drink, but not the glorious beer I had back in 2002. I expect that is more down to my palate than to any significant change in the beer itself. [2.9]

cask at burton bridge inn fruity nose but has that hint of sourness I look for in a decent porter. Complex malt background and good bittermess too...nice.

500ml bottle. Disappointed in this. Low flavour and watery mouthfeel. Slight sulphury taste the only redeeming factor. Preferred Bramble Stout by the same brewery.

50 cl bottle @ Kahdet Kasvot, Tampere.
Pours murky red colour with medium head. Aroma of cherries, berries, malts, grass and stomach acid. Flavour of berries like strawberry and bilberries, mild malts, ripe fruits and vegetables. Quite repulsive to be honest, the berryness is too dominating for a watery palate like this.

I actually managed to rate the alias before. A new bottle, just as bad as befone. Tastes like stale real rinsed in dirty dishes. What were they drinking when they thought this is good?

In bottle as Festive Christmas Porter. Pours a slighty hazy, deep ruby colour with a thin tan head. Yeast, apple seed and alcohol nose. Some roasty malt flavour with apple seed and alcohol again. Moderate carbonation and CO2 prickle. Not my thing.
