COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION Cask; Special (Gold Medal Ale series) - April 2008. Gold Medal Ales are produced monthly in recognition of some of the ’greats’ of history. This month’s story :- John Walker, chemist and apothecary, of Stockton-on-Tees mixed chemicals that when dry and rubbed on a rough surface, burst into flames. He coated the ends of wooden spills and sold his first matches as Congreve’s, after the fiery Congreve’s Rocket on April 7th 1827. Walker neither patented nor exploited his product because he wanted it to benefit mankind. However, this didn’t stop others jumping on the band wagon and he was only given credit for his invention after his death in 1859. Colour: Amber Nose: Hoppy with hints of fruit Taste: Clean bitterness Hops: English Pioneer & Challenger
