COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Special (Gold Medal Ale series) - February 2007.

Straw coloured with lingering bitterness. Brewed with Bramling Cross and Progress hops.
Who’s for Sphairistike? (Greek for ball game) must have been the cry in 1874 when Major Walter Wingfield patented a game played on an hour glass court with a net stretched across the middle. Others developed similar games at the same time but he was the one who patented his rules. Fortunately the game survived but the name did not and Walter is now considered to be the Father of lawn tennis.

Colour: Straw
Taste: Lingering bitterness
Hops: Brambling Cross & Progress

Polypin@Black Horse, Walcote. Golden beer with a florally light aroma and a hopped, caramel and dry flavour. Overall an average beer.

The Black Horse, Walcote. Without question the most offensively squash-like lifeless flatness of any pint I’ve ever been poured anywhere in the world. Ever. But for all that, some very lengthy, digestive biscuit malty hop bitterness that almost had me ordering another.

Cask@The Wenlock Arms. An average bitter, the sum of its parts, both bitter and hoppy, but niether dominating each other. Grainy malt, citric hops.

A Mes rate: Cask at the Wenlock. Looks like a bitter. Tastes like a bitter. But it’s actually jolly good. Enjoyably hoppy and citric with a nice bitter finish. Whowouldathunkit? No honestly, its rather tasty.

Cask condition, handpull at Wenlock Arms. Leaparsons has stolen my interesting fact about this being named after a form of tennis which has a Greek name, which we were told about at the pub. Copper coloured bitter with bubbly off white head. Bit of citrus with some bitterness. Pretty good citrus actually. Nice enogh bitter.

Burton Bridge seem to be producing scores of monthly ’Gold Medal’ specials. This one is a good deal better than their ’Ring King’ from a couple of months back. Dark gold, with a frothy white head. Gentle sweet hoppy aroma. Long, deep, rounded malt taste. Sharp bitterness. Really tasty beer. I enjoyed this.

Polypin, Black Horse, Walcote. Gold/amber with a small head. Aromas are caramel malts with pear, tea and light pine. Also some sulphur. Quite earthy. Flavours are pear and Autumn fruit with caramel malts and peppery, dry hops. Chalky dry on the aftertaste. Sphairistike is a Greek early form of tennis, apparently.
