DuffMan (2548), currently living in NZ, but from, Alberta, Canada Jul 3, 2009 Bottle, purchased at Meenan’s in Dunedin. Dark ruby amber with a masive parfait-like head that collapses into chunky flotsam. Initial aroma is predominantly cooked apples, but as the head recedes a strong spiciness becomes prominant. Flavours of marzipan and orange brandy, quite spicy and boozy. Long finish with some boozy alcohol in the finish that warms the throat. A sipper to be sure, but quite nice. weaselkenievil (566), Cheshire, England Jun 24, 2009 Deep brown with big bubbled light cream head. Does definitely have a Christmassy feel to it. Or is that me? Alcohol is very present but that satisfies the tramp in me. Mince pie like smell, dark fruits, berries, plum. Not bad but there are more palatable beers I’d rather drink next time. ogivlado (2870), Zagreb, Croatia Apr 3, 2009 Bottled(500ml). -Murky amber coloured, huge beige head, dark fruits nose. Moderate malty, dark fruits and mild chocolate taste with notes of raisins and spices. Dry fruity finish. Very nice Burton Bridge beer. garthicus (1040), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 1, 2009 Thanks to HogTownHarry. BB Mar 07. Appearance: Darkish red/brown with a nice off white frothy head. Aroma: Malt, candy, hops, caramel, alcohol and raisins. Flavour: Nice and malty, alcohol present, tangy pine, winter spice, long bitter whiskey finish. Like yngwie says below, I can imagine a good book and an open fire... not a bad brew. yngwie (4466), Kristiansand, Norway Feb 23, 2009 Bottle, shared by KnutAlbert. It’s looking quite nice in the glass, with a clear, golden-orange body under a finger-thick off-white to beige head. Malty-sweet nose with some licorice and alcohol. Some roasted notes too. Caramel, roasted malt, sweetness, dried fruits and alcohol in the mouth, full-bodied, sweetish and warming. Bitter finish with some alchol. Rather unusual to experience an English dubbel, but it was quite nice. Imagine a deep chair, a good book and an open fire. And preferably an even better beer... ;-) I could settle with this one though. (081215) DruncanVeasey (2369), The Penguin’s Arms, Warwickshire, England Jan 28, 2009 Bottle from Arden Wines. Murky chestnut pour with a thick and persistent collar at the ABV. Ripe estery aroma of banana, pear, overripe apple peel, strudel-like spices (clove, cinnamon), toffee, leather, solvent and a pungent underpinning of oily (Kentish?) hoppage. Not bad. Flavour opens with an almost weizenbock intensity of fruit and alcohol, merging into raw alcohol bitterness, varnish, oak, compensating biscuit, butter, raisin, plenty of alcohol heat with every sip. Ends up pretty harsh and unrefined, with little of the promised spice or fruitbowl esteriness emerging from behind the booze and astringency. Doppel and Weizenbock more than ’Abbey Dubbel’ I’d say. Decent enough strong ale not as great as it smells. RPillsbury (88), Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England Jan 22, 2009 Nice cinnamon aroma. There are a lot of strong flavours in this beer. Orange, banana and cloves come through. A powerful beer but a bit too carbonated. sdriessen (188), Dunedin, New Zealand Jan 19, 2009 Rated with donfardz64. Pours amber/brown with a rocky white head that turns sticky.
Rather subtle (almost boring) aromas of apple, some spice and sweet malt.
some date, toffee and a leathery yeast aroma. Alcohol is strong on the nose.
Initial flavours are dominated by alcohol and a sweetness like golden syrup.
Some bitterness in the finish, but the obvious alcohol isn’t very pleasant.
