The bottle Radek and I shared last night at Smokeless Joe's was 10.1% ABV. Caramel and sweet malt aroma. Murky brown colour, very small head. Mellow malt flavour, with some plums and figs also. Rich texture, medium bodied. Very well made. I thought it seemed more like a Barley Wine?

Fresh hoppy floral nose. POurs to brown mud like colour with a decent light brown head. Complex flavour with raisins, coffee and toasted malt. Has a long lasting massively tasteful finish.

strong malty and toffee like aroma, cloudy brown hue with a good brown head, malty with toffee notes, strong alcohol tones, glossy palate, this is a classic bottle conditioned sample, an excellent warmer.

Beware the explosion upon opening! Thereafter this is a hoppy "abbey"-like ale. A hybrid of Duvel and a brune in a pint glass! I like it.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Iíve never seen a beer do what this does--bubble incessantly out of the bottle upon opening. Wow. Nevertheless, this doesnít necessarily translate into overcarbonation. It has a rather Belgian dubbel like consistency and flavoring--banana, yeast--although one would be right in pointing up the harshness of the bitter finish. Not quite there, but I thought this a good effort.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 24, 2003 Re rate same batch as previous rate, now aged six months (!) starting to develop a good malty peardrop aroma and the finish has lost some of its bite. Old rating-Had been prewarned that it was prone to gushing but was still unprepared for the shower of beer on opening. Managed to get most in the glass but inevitably got most of the yeast sediment as well. I normally like the yeast but in this case It gave the beer a yeasty bitterness that detracted from the intended taste. Lots of fruit malt chocolate and yeast in the nose. Dark (sludgy) brown colour with a reasonable head. Coffee fruitcake and figs in the mouth and a powdery dry yeast note that became overpowering in the aftertaste. Reminded me of a Westmalle dubbel but way over carbonated.

Take care to handle the bottle the right way!!! If not, the whole thing will disappear into the air once you open it. Itís yeasty, of course. Very yeasty. We didnít find much else....But there was some fruitiness left...and strong it was...Well.
