TheGrandMaster (1846), Auckland, New Zealand Nov 19, 2008 Bottle (in NZ), pours a hazy brown with a think off-white foam head. Woody on the nose, with a pleasant fruitiness along with biscuity malt. A smooth mouthfeel at first, then quickly becomes spicy and tangy. Some woody notes and toffee malt. Finishes with a peppery dryness. Very nice. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden Oct 1, 2008 (Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Dark brown colour with ruby hints. Frothy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of red berries, dried fruit, caramel and hints of chocolate. Fruity, malty, spicy taste with dark fruit, nuts, prunes, raisins and generous amounts of spicy hops in the finish. Medium to full body, fairly bitter and rather sweet. Brewed in Burton, Staffordshire? Seriously, you mean Belgium? No? Oh dear, I’m impressed, this is actually a little masterpiece in the abbey dubbel style. Excellent beer! tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway Jun 6, 2008 500 ml bottle, bougth in Wales by neighbour Kjetil - tanks! Brown color, moderate off-white head. Aroma is sweet. Flavor is sweet, with caramel malt, some hops, fruit and alcohol. A strange sweetness in this... imdownthepub (5086), Banbury, Oxfordshire, England Jan 27, 2008 Bottle Conditioned, 500ml, aged 6yrs. Chestnut colour with white head. This has aged well, smooth, portish, winey with a heavy malted body with a rich fruitiness and a background alcohol but without the burn. Good sweet wine finish, rosey and full. Very good beer, enjoyable. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Nov 27, 2007 A Mes rate: 50cl bottle from The Bottle Stop Interesting stuff. A good representation of an Abbey ale with an English twist. Very Belgian aroma of sweet yeast and malt with lashings of creamy alcohol and a hoppy accent. Lovely appearance. Deep dark amber with a pillowy beige head. Aroma is matched in the flavour but the alcohol is a little too over powering and holds back the pleasant stuff underneath. The finish, being full of cardboard and alcohol, completes the let down. Close, but no biscuit. harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England Nov 22, 2007 500ml bottle from Notts BF 07. Way too strong and unsubtle. Clear chestnut colour with really thick beige head. Strong fruity aroma. Syrupy malt, hot alcohol. Plums are the fruits in the mouth. Good condition though. thebeertourist (2750), Oslo, Norway Nov 17, 2007 Bottle. Hazy, dark bronze with a thick tan head. Earthy aroma with hints of fruit and wood. Fruity flavours with chocolate notes, earth and some wood. Dry and salty finish. A very well-balanced beer with a lot going on. ante (2904), Stockholm, Sweden Oct 15, 2007 Bottled. Pale hazy brown appearance with a firm tan-coloured foam. Nutty and chocolately aroma with notes of fudge, dades and figs. Full-bodied and warming with notes of nuts, milky chocolate, mild banana and figs. Long malty finish with notes of crackers, yeast, fudge and toasted malts.
