hughie (3018), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Nov 15, 2006 Hazy dark red-brown. Lasting off-white head. Spicy malt aroma with some yeast. Some sweetness in the taste, but the bitterness in the finish seems all-pervasive. Good try, but it’s a bit one dimensional. motelpogo (4394), Plzen, Czech Republic Oct 26, 2006 bottle, thanks duff. reddish colour with a lingering head. not much sign of alcohol, tasted of strawberry jam and butter on toast fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Sep 18, 2006 Bottle. Hazy amber color with a off white head. Sweet malty aroma with notes of caramel and fruit. Malty flavor with spices and some fruity sweetness.
DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 4, 2006 Bottle sent from Canada. Clear ruby-brown body under a creamy tan head. Plum, strawberry seed, peanut, and lightly toasty dark caramel malt - an estery yeast wraps things up. Dry woody flavor - plum, dry caramel, pine resin and english hops with an orange flesh and green apple yeast at the end. Full mouthfeel. A Belgian-styled English brewer making a Belgian - neat! Fin (3382), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Aug 3, 2006 Updated: Aug 17, 2006500ml Bottle picked up at the Grog shop, Jericho, Oxford 29-07-06. This poured a wonderful red, almost looked like a deep rich claret, no head to speak of. Fruity and almost rum like aroma, tasted fruity and malty but I found the alcohol to be a little harsh. Whilst I am impressed with the effort and imagination that has gone into this I’m not sure that it is a particularly good example of its type. I struggled with it a bit. radiomgb (1921), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Jul 31, 2006 500ml bottle from <a
href=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/ontario/toronto/smokeless-joe/11.htm target=blank>Smokeless Joe in Toronto. Reddish-brown in colour, long lasting beige coloured head, lots of lacing. The aroma was of candied fruits, brown sugar, bananas, spices, raisins, bready malts. The flavour was of raisins, pears, bananas, caramel/toffee, plums, some chocolate, some spice. Full creamy mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes lingering, alcohol warmth, fruity sweetness. Much better then the description from the bartender as "a cross between a blonde and an amber." MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Jul 8, 2006 Bottle thans to HogtownHarry. Shared with Hyde. Pours deep mahogony with abundant being froth and matching belgian style lace. Plum and raisins fill the nose. Burnt malts accompany and are folowed by tin and sulfur. I’m told the water in Burton-on-Trent is sulfuric, and so this may be the reason. Sweet and fruity, very full malt flavours are nice, but are followed with a marked metallic and mineral presence. FInish is fruity, slightly thin. The tin gets in the way of this one. It’s good, but minus the tim, it would be very good. Thanks Harry! Emil (6075), Copenhagen, Denmark Mar 8, 2006 Bottle. Hazy dark orange colour with a big tan head. Heavy malty, fruity aroma and a dry fruits, light spicy taste. Medium body with a fruity finish.
