MrManning (1458), London, Ontario, Canada Jul 8, 2006 Bottle thans to HogtownHarry. Shared with Hyde. Pours deep mahogony with abundant being froth and matching belgian style lace. Plum and raisins fill the nose. Burnt malts accompany and are folowed by tin and sulfur. I’m told the water in Burton-on-Trent is sulfuric, and so this may be the reason. Sweet and fruity, very full malt flavours are nice, but are followed with a marked metallic and mineral presence. FInish is fruity, slightly thin. The tin gets in the way of this one. It’s good, but minus the tim, it would be very good. Thanks Harry!
wyzzywyz22 (453), Wirral, Merseyside, England Nov 21, 2008 Bottle, Ale Cellar, Darlington. Poured a reddy brown with a lively foaming head.
Aroma was roasted malt and some dark fruit. Taste wise, this had similar elements, but was somewhat lacking in real body and the yeasty edge to this loses it marks. Pleasant enough boozy hit, but falls short of anything special. TheGrandMaster (1526), Auckland, New Zealand Nov 19, 2008 Bottle (in NZ), pours a hazy brown with a think off-white foam head. Woody on the nose, with a pleasant fruitiness along with biscuity malt. A smooth mouthfeel at first, then quickly becomes spicy and tangy. Some woody notes and toffee malt. Finishes with a peppery dryness. Very nice. Svesse (1877), Hässelby, Sweden Oct 1, 2008 (Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Dark brown colour with ruby hints. Frothy, beige head. Fruity, malty nose with notes of red berries, dried fruit, caramel and hints of chocolate. Fruity, malty, spicy taste with dark fruit, nuts, prunes, raisins and generous amounts of spicy hops in the finish. Medium to full body, fairly bitter and rather sweet. Brewed in Burton, Staffordshire? Seriously, you mean Belgium? No? Oh dear, I’m impressed, this is actually a little masterpiece in the abbey dubbel style. Excellent beer! tarjei (1369), Bryne, Norway Jun 6, 2008 500 ml bottle, bougth in Wales by neighbour Kjetil - tanks! Brown color, moderate off-white head. Aroma is sweet. Flavor is sweet, with caramel malt, some hops, fruit and alcohol. A strange sweetness in this... imdownthepub (4248), Banbury, Oxfordshire, England Jan 27, 2008 Bottle Conditioned, 500ml, aged 6yrs. Chestnut colour with white head. This has aged well, smooth, portish, winey with a heavy malted body with a rich fruitiness and a background alcohol but without the burn. Good sweet wine finish, rosey and full. Very good beer, enjoyable.
