Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A deep brown colour with a foamy off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, some coffee, some blackberry and earthy hops. Taste of roasted malts, some coffee, slight sour dark fruits, cherry, nuts and earthy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A dry, roasted bitterness in the finish with a lasting fruity aftertaste. An ok stout, roasty and slightly fruity.

A pleasant surprise as Iím more a porter than a stout man. Aroma more black coffee than chocolate for me. Thin head with lace. Dark through and through. Smooth tasting with hop finish. Almost sorry (almost) itís 5% as it could monopolize my attention for an evening. And that is not usual in a stout. Admittedly the other 8 ales on offer tend towards the extra pale.

Cask Pint at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Jan 2014 - Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty malts, coffee, chocolate, a bit ashy. Hoppy; good hop bitterness. Fruity; hint of dark fruits. Bitter roast malty throughout and quite dry; increasingly bitter into the finish. Very drinkable.

On cask at the Alexander Graham Bell. Appearance - opaque black with a decent head. Nose - some roast then tar. Very slight note of dark chocolate. Taste - more tar going into liquorice. Still not hugely chocolate. Something savoury in there too. Palate - medium bodied with a dry tangy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - interesting stout. Got better down the glass.
