Cask at cloisters. Dark brown, red highlights, creamy off-white head. Mild dark chocolate, coffee, slightly tangy fruit. Savoury palate, ashy, dark chocolate, herbal spiced finish. Not bad at all.

Cask at the Moon under Water, Hounslow. Near black with a lasting tan foam, a little chilled so a bit light on aroma, but rich and dry, with a sweet burnt-bitter edge, notes of red fruit and ash, hints of burnt cocoa and liquorice. Lovely.

Cask @ White House, Luton
Kolor: Czarny, nieprzejrzysty. Piana brązowa, piękny lacing na szkle. Piana opada do minimalistycznej otoczki. W aromacie delikatna kawa, ciemne owoce lasu (jeżyna, jagody). Troszeczkę czarnej porzeczki z tyłu. W drugim niuchu bardzo solidna paloność i mnóstwo gorzkiej czekolady. W smaku mocno palone przechodzące w popiół. Silne posmaki papierosów i cygaro. Prócz tego owoce lasu i czarna porzeczka. W oddali odrobina kawy i ponownie gorzka czekolada.
Średnia tekstura, dość wytrawny finisz.
OK, ale bez szału.

Cask @ Montgomery’s Tower. Pours black with ruby hints. Initial smooth chocolate with nods towards liquorice and roast. Thought this would be a high-rater but finished rather thin and seemed to fade fast.

Cask HP at The Crosse Keys London as ’Burton Bridge Top Dog Stout’, 5.0%. Highly patriotic pump clip. Opaque black with a minimal brown head. Aroma is quite airy, molasses, some smokey notes. Body is pretty smooth with low carbonation. Taste is sweet roasted malts, treacle, some date, touches of ashtray, light drying astringency in the finish but not enough bitterness to balance out the sugars. At least not for my taste, anyway. Big bodied and sweet. Very much a pre-craft-revolution stout! I think this is decent enough, and it grew on me as the bitterness built up. I could see some people going above 4.0 on this one.

Cask at The Green Dragon, Leek (JDW) A deep brown colour with a foamy off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, some coffee, some blackberry and earthy hops. Taste of roasted malts, some coffee, slight sour dark fruits, cherry, nuts and earthy hops. Medium bodied and soft carbonation. A dry, roasted bitterness in the finish with a lasting fruity aftertaste. An ok stout, roasty and slightly fruity.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A pleasant surprise as I’m more a porter than a stout man. Aroma more black coffee than chocolate for me. Thin head with lace. Dark through and through. Smooth tasting with hop finish. Almost sorry (almost) it’s 5% as it could monopolize my attention for an evening. And that is not usual in a stout. Admittedly the other 8 ales on offer tend towards the extra pale.

Cask Pint at Wibbas Down (JDW), Wimbledon, London in Jan 2014 - Black in colour. Very Malty; roasty malts, coffee, chocolate, a bit ashy. Hoppy; good hop bitterness. Fruity; hint of dark fruits. Bitter roast malty throughout and quite dry; increasingly bitter into the finish. Very drinkable.
