[Cask at the Three Guineas, Reading] Ruby-brown, large beige head & a slight fizz. Sour, woody aroma. Earthy taste with hints of smoke, coffee and blackberry. Very bitter for the style, which rather ruins the underlying flavours.

Cask, King’s Head, Carlisle. A fine dark mild. Deep ruby black appearance, with an off-yellow head, which foamed nicely and remained throughout the pint(s). I found this really balanced - enough sweetness and juicy fruit flavours as you’d expect/hope for in a beer of this style, with hints of chocoalte aswell, but offset with just enough bitterness, bringing out dryness in the finish. The unmistakeable Burton taste comes through very well. The only downside was it being a little low in aroma.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 27 Nov 2009) Dark brown colour, almost black, with brief beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dark bread, raisins and prunes. Malty, roasted taste with raisins, prunes, coffee, wort and a dry finish with fairly low bitterness. Rather thin body but fairly tasty. Decent mild.

On tap, not much head, very dark in colour. Slight but obvious roasted taste, not terrible but not a good mild.
