3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
The aroma is sweet and malty; cloudy, medium-amber with a long-lasting head; nicely smooth and thick; initially sweet, then the taste turns to alcohol with just a slight amount of bitterness - unfortunately, the alcohol dominates

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 18E). Bottle 33 cl - Batch B4 07 4. AROMA: sweet malt background with caramel and spicy notes. strong spicy alcohol presence but not solventy. APPEARANCE: coppery color and translucent. average ivory head with good retention. lacing is present due to high alcohol derived viscosity. TASTE: sweet caramely like flavour. high alcohol presence. low bitterness and a semi-sweet finish. PALATE: medium-low body with a strong alcohol presence. OVERALL: a beer that lacks the malt complexity of the competition and with a very strong alcohol presence.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
250ml bottle served in a chalice.
A: Pours a beautiful clear amber color with many tiny particles suspended inside. Forms a small tan head and retention is low. Not many lacings are left in the glass, however a small layer remains on the top for a long time
S: Very sweet and Belgian style, I mean, sweet candy, honey, Belgian yeasts, sweet grains and alcohol
T: As the nose. Sweet upfront. Sweet candy sugar, sweet grains, honey, Belgian yeasts followed by a mild but pleasant hoppy bitterness
M: Creamy heavy molasses body. Medium to low carbonation. Aftertaste is sweet and bitter at the same time
O: Great beer. Belgian to the bone

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma is caramel, malt and Belgian yeast. Taste is sweet, malty, pruney with a hint of flat coke and slight sourness. Strongest beer I've ever drunk. Quite subtle considering the abv.

Gylden brun klar med høyt beige skum som minker fort. Lukter søtt av karamell og brunt sukker. Søtlige smaker av brendt karamell og malt. Kjenner at det er en del alkohol i denne. Skarp, bitter men forholdsvis kort

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: SEP 20, 2014 Classic big Belgian since 1933, having enjoyed the honorable title of "strongest Belgian beer" for many a decade. Dense and moussy, yellowish white, regular head which retains surprisingly well considering the very high ABV; orange blond colour, clear with steady sparkling. Fairly strong, candied aroma of orange zest, mandarin liqueur, mango, passion fruit, red apple, honey, cloves, bourbon, white candi sugar, liquorice, butterscotch, flowers, spicy hops and a faint hint of lemon juice; ’cooked’ pasteurization as well, but forgiven in this case as it is covered by the relative complexity of the bouquet and fading as the beer warms. Sweet onset with lots of orange, candied figs and dried apricot as well as candi sugar, slick and supple, sharpish carbo, some minerals playing on a caramelly and honeyish malt sweetness, but the candi sweetness lingers till deep in the finish - but that’s where it happens: it is balanced out by herbal hops, and warming, vinous, brandy-like alcohol takes over without becoming astringent. I prefer a beer ending better than promised over a beer the other way around. If there ever was such a thing as ’Belgian barley wine’ (not that the brewer, or any Belgian brewer cares), this is the archetype of it. Very good - for a pasteurized bottle, at least.

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Corps moyen a élevé. Carbonation moyenne. Un gros bof pour cette bière... Déception
