The worlds strongest christmas beer says the bottle! Actually the alcohol is well disguised. Amber ale with a little chocolate. Lacks complexity but very drinkable. gam (1059), brisbane, Australia Oct 18, 2009 Good head biege colour, misty burgundy pour, aroma spicy wine dark fruit yeast, flavour raisin port wine cinnamon cherry yeast liccorice, alcohol well hidden, caramel taste good finish full on tastes and with a nice mellowness. BeerChaser0078 (283), Melbourne, Australia Oct 11, 2009 Bottle. Pours clear dark amber with a short lived white head. Aroma is fairly spicy with notes of toffee, malt, ginger and cinnamon. Flavour is fairly alcoholic as well as having a lot sweet spiciness and hints of caramel, malt and burnt sugar. Full bodied and smooth while stiil being slightly sticky on the palate, this is pretty good but not outstanding with the sweetness getting heavier as it goes. neepsntatties (280), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 7, 2009 25 cl bottle. Colour... cloudy reddish-brown with a very thick, frothy head. Nose... sweet, candi sugar, dried fruits and hops. Palate... coatingly sweet, dates, currants, sultanas, treacle, Christmas spice, and plenty of alcohol which seems somewhat overboard relative to the aforementioned flavours . Still, a nice Christmas ale to sip by the fire. Brigadier (1212), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Aug 24, 2009 12 oz bottle
This was an interesting beer to try after a few months of careful cellaring. Perhaps this season I will pick up a four pack of my own to sit on and drink one every three to four months. Beers like this are what more brewers should be doing with their Christmas seasonals rather than just dropping in some spice and calling it quits.
Aroma / Appearance - The amber brown body retained a nice head for a few minutes until about half the glass was gone. Only then did it gain a homogeneous fluid appearance.
The nose was sweet with hints of spice, sugar, and other fruits. Six months has treated it well.
Flavor / Palate - The booziness is only a minor component but evident enough that I consider it a slight flaw. Otherwise the malty sweetness makes this a drinkable winter warmer that will keep you busy for a while. Balanced for such a high gravity it probably could take a few more years on the shelf and still come out an excellent product. Fred82 (343), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 18, 2009 Bottle. Aroma is spicy, fruity and nutty. Taste is quite alcoholic, spicy with hints of red fruits. you can feel the spicyness on the back on the tongue. Nice winter beer. Well made, nice balance. Slokop (91), Tilburg, Netherlands Aug 1, 2009 Off-white small head on a darkish red to brown body. Smells malty and spicy. Tones of red fruits, plums and figs. Bitterness, if any, is overwhelmed by these tastes. Alcohol is over the top. Would have preferred more citric hops and less alcohol. A once in a winter beer, utmost. Chrism86 (273), Melbourne, Australia Jul 13, 2009 Pours red with a quickly dissipating beige head. Nose has detectable sweetness, most likely from malt and candy sugar. Also has dark fruits and spice. Palate has a touch of sweetness with yeast spice & abv dominating, also a hint of oak detectable...(oak aged?) Finishes long and slightly sweet with abv popping up again. Perhaps the abv is a little to evident, at about 10% i think the palate would really shine. Still great beer!
