3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 islay (637) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - DEC 30, 2011
11.2 oz. bottle, labeled “Scaldis Noel.” Consumed on 12-29-11. Complex, deep aroma features toffee, raisin, caramel, and plum with a bit of tart apple sharpness. Delightful and very Christmas-y smell, though I’d prefer it to be stronger still. Pours a deep, mostly clear (though with some haze) amber with light to moderate effervescence and a small amount of beige head. Taste has a sweet start and a tart, spicy finish. Boozy; alcohol definitely noticeable. Flavors include toffee and Roman nougat candy with dark chocolate. Perhaps a bit excessively sweet, ultimately. Heavy body. Lively and fizzy in the palate. It’s a little much in the palate, yet surprisingly easy to drink. Overall, Scaldis Noel is charming and seasonally appropriate, but ultimately it is merely good and not great.

From a bottle with the Scaldis Noel label. Yeast, a little orange, and some hay/grass in the aroma. Flavor has some bread and cherry with some alcohol, but not as much as you’d expect for a 12% beer. Alcohol provides a dry finish.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 ExpendableHero (572) - Florida, USA - DEC 29, 2011
Decent Christmas brew. Burnt orange/deep amber color with a fluffy, khaki head. Smells of dough, cotton candy, and some herbal funk. Tastes of earthy notes, bread, oatmeal cookies, candy sugar, and some herbal note: mint maybe. Sweet, candy aftertaste. Not bad, but this was a bit too sweet, and a bit of a mess on the palate.

Pours an amber orange color with a thin white head. Not very carbonated, almost looks like a cognac. Nose is caramel, sweet and yeast. Mouthfeel is thick. Taste is sweet, spicy, yeasty and alcohol.

Bottled, 250ml aged 10 yrs as Bush de Noel. Copper to chestnut with white head. The long wait was worthwhile, this was rich and warming, there is a port like character and the sweetness developed out. Pleasantly spiced and hints of hop. A very pleasant beer for Christmas day.
