The West Country’s favourite beer derives from pure Mendip Spring Water…notably bitter, clean tasting, refreshingly dry and distinctive. Made with 100% best Maris Otter malt (the Rolls Royce of malts), together with a blend of (never divulged) English hop varieties…Butcombe Bitter is a moreish Mendip masterpiece.

Cask. An amber beer with a lazing orangey head. The aroma has notes of caramel and malt as well as a light note of nuts. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and caramel, as well as lighter notes of nuts and flowery hops, leading to a bitter finish.

Cask at GBBF2007 (or some pub outside the festivaltime), found when going through old ratingnotebooks. Amber colour, with small off-white creamy head, that lasts for a while. Aroma is wood, mildly fruity along with some bready malts. Flavour is quite much the same, but the wooden bitterness is a bit stronger. Semi-dry finish.

Cask Conditioned at The Glassblower, London, as Traditional Bitter
Beautiful dark amber color, almost no head. Light aroma, maybe with light nuts. Dark caramel flavor, strong bitterness, even too strong at the end. Straightforward. Must be punished for the disturbing burnt malt aftertaste.

Cask at the Brewery Tap in West London. Labeled as ’Butcombe Original bitter’. Pours clear brown with a fine, white cream head. Toasty and doughy bread in the nose with a few berries, too. Light to medium sweet flavor with some toasty sugars, wet wood and leaves, berries and light leather. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Decent condition. Lightly sweet to finish, lightly dry, faintly musty with dry and toasty bread, leathery fruits and toasted sugar. OK, but not great, just so we’re clear.
