3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sept 2009: This beer was on cask at my overnight accommodation this week, really glad I choose to stay at ’The Lamb Inn’, Iron Acton.
Poured a lovely deep, dark amber, clear, wholesome and smooth looking. One of the whitest of white heads I’ve ever seen on a bitter, it was only thin, but it stayed and left some lacing as the beer level sank.
I had three pints and loved each one, the hops and barley aroma was slightly sulphurus but not off-putting in any way, it just added to the bitterness that came towards the finish of each mouthful. It is a true flavoursome English Bitter and was the only beer the brewery produced for its first 18 years, they now do three others.
Very moorish, which is why I had three of these and didn’t get to try the others, which were also on offer, along with Bass and Courage Bitter (all on cask!).

Cask conditioned @ The Globe, Highcliffe. Fairly pale. Some sulphur with sweet malt notes with some fruitier strawlike hops in the mouth. Quite tasty for what it does.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pint pulled at the Ring o’ Bells in Chagford (Devon), a clear copper with a thin bubbly white head. A warm malty aroma. Good malty flavour at first, followed by a hoppy bitter finish. Solid.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Cask, Handpump @ the Wellsway Inn, West Harptree.
Served quite cool, but not cold. Poured a bright, pale, tawny copper with a little residual carbonation pushing up a rocky white crown that gripped on and left some firm lacing. A short burst of butter preceded some nice toasted malt notes on the nose. Woody tight malts in the mouth give it a drier edge with some salty, nuttiness in back before a spicy, bitter hop swallow. Body is medium-light with a little spritz of carbonation making it a highly recommendable quaffer. Finish has a touch of smoke with the woody malts lingering well between swallows. I can’t remember how many I downed during the evening with thanks to the friendly landlords joining my wife and I for bevvies. A lovely, flavoursome bitter.

Can’t believe I’ve never rated this!
Pours dark brown with fluffy cream head and slightly sulphorous earthy hops and malt aroma. Clean and roudned mouthfeel of malt, some biscuit, dry hop bitterness in the finish. My benchmark bitter.

Hand pulled pint from the Fleece Hotel, Cirencester: poured amber with a small head. Light aroma of herbal hops and grain. Pretty watery all the way around with some light hop notes and malt. Moderate bitter finish. Not real good.
