COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask: Regular.
Previously brewed at 3.9%.
NOSE: Hoppy, malty, citrus, with a slight sulphur aroma.
PALATE: Light fruit notes, with a long, dry, bitter finish.
COMMENTS: A notably bitter beer…amber in colour, clean tasting, refreshingly dry and distinctive. Made with 100% English malts together with a blend of traditional English hop varieties.
HISTORY: Butcombe’s only beer for the Brewery’s first 18 years, and still the best seller, accounting for 75% of production. 3 times a finalist at The Great British Beer Festival…incredibly has never won!

Can’t believe I’ve never rated this! Pours dark brown with fluffy cream head and slightly sulphorous earthy hops and malt aroma. Clean and roudned mouthfeel of malt, some biscuit, dry hop bitterness in the finish. My benchmark bitter.

Slightly sulphurous nose, but this is not reflected in the taste. Some malt and hints of bitterness linger. Quite drinkable at this strength, but taste is unremarkable

Cask at the Adam. Mid copper coloured bitter. Taste has quite some malt, with a moderately bitter hop flavour and a brief finish. Nice enough session beer (which I tried, and it did work) but in the grand scheme of things dull.

Sept 2009: This beer was on cask at my overnight accommodation this week, really glad I choose to stay at ’The Lamb Inn’, Iron Acton. Poured a lovely deep, dark amber, clear, wholesome and smooth looking. One of the whitest of white heads I’ve ever seen on a bitter, it was only thin, but it stayed and left some lacing as the beer level sank. I had three pints and loved each one, the hops and barley aroma was slightly sulphurus but not off-putting in any way, it just added to the bitterness that came towards the finish of each mouthful. It is a true flavoursome English Bitter and was the only beer the brewery produced for its first 18 years, they now do three others. Very moorish, which is why I had three of these and didn’t get to try the others, which were also on offer, along with Bass and Courage Bitter (all on cask!).

distinctly unimpressed. probably more to do with the condition of the beer and its service than the beer itself. scummy head on a slightly straw body. weak aroma and tasted like cold tea/cat waz! cask. white lion. clifton. bristol.

Pleasant ruby appearance. Light floral nose, light hops. Buttery flavor with a pretty smooth, dry finish. A totally reasonable bitter.

Cask @ Alloa Real Ale Festival 2011. Copper colour, bubbly off-white head. Nose is massive vegetables. Really unpleasant. Flavour is light malted, bit fruity, slight caramel malts. Dry and bitter finish.
