Pint from cask. Quite a dark pour with a fair head. Slight aroma of coffee. Tastes of milky coffee. Very strongly. No other tastes whatsoever. Like drinking a cup of white, unsweetened coffee at grandad’s house. Weird, but not altogether unpleasant.

Cask at the Sir Michael Balcon (JDW), pours a dark red-brown with a beige head, aromas of roast coffee, dark fruit and a little toffee, palate is dry-sweet with a hoppy edge, more toffee notes and a hint of port, then a dry roasted finish with a lasting bitterness. Good stuff.

Cask-conditioned, twice on 12/02/2011, at the Bell, Hillgrove Street, Bristol and Colston’s Yard. Interesting contrast of appearance, in the subdued lighting of the Bell, it was near black with a decent off-white head. In the brighter, cafe style CY, it was a medium brown with some hints of red and a similar head. This was very easy drinking, with some coffee and sweetish cereal notes, before a slightly roasted, dry finish. It’s good to see Butcombe brewing a wider ranger of beers. Excellent.

sm89walt (1419) - Norwich, Norfolk, ENGLAND - FEB 6, 2011
Cask - The Bell Hotel (JDW), Norwich. Small though lasting, creamy-bubbly beige head leaving some lace atop a very dark brown body. Roasted malt & coffee aroma. Similar flavour profile with chocolate notes, finishing with a lingering dry coffee bitterness. Soft & smooth on the palate, medium body with a lasting bitter malt finish. A nice, fairly hefty though easy dinking porter.
