Cask gravity @ The Duchess of Cambridge, Stamford Brook W6. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty rich chocolate aroma. Roasted malty chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish with hints of caramel in the aftertaste.

Cask at The Black Friar, London. Pours very, very dark ruby with a creamy tan head. Coffee aroma. Flavor is coffee with smooth dark malt, and perhaps a bit of chocolate. Medium bitter. Delicious.

Roast and a little fruit aromas. Dark coloured a little rich on the palate and fruity with some alcohol present. Bitter and slightly dry burnt roast finish.

Cask (Tivoli (JDW), Cambridge)
Toffee aroma. A touch of burnt cake, complete with the raisins touching the side of the baking tray - delicious! Smooth soft palate. Very pleasant roast. Very easy drinker. The roast is quite a rich one, but not oppressive or ashy at all. A very solid porter. More please!

UPDATED: JAN 6, 2013 Cask Conditioned handpump Eastgate Northampton. A black porter. Didn’t make notes on this as didn’t realise it was different to Butcombe Old Vic which showed up as rated. I did however score it, and from those marks it’s obvious I enjoyed it. From memory it was a really smooth porter with good dark malt flavours. Score 3.7

Cask-conditioned, twice on 12/02/2011, at the Bell, Hillgrove Street, Bristol and Colston’s Yard. Interesting contrast of appearance, in the subdued lighting of the Bell, it was near black with a decent off-white head. In the brighter, cafe style CY, it was a medium brown with some hints of red and a similar head. This was very easy drinking, with some coffee and sweetish cereal notes, before a slightly roasted, dry finish. It’s good to see Butcombe brewing a wider ranger of beers. Excellent.

Dark reddish brown colour with small frothy off-white head.
Roasted malt, chocolate, earth and farm yard in aroma.
Roasted malt, dry hops, chocolate and liquorice in balanced flavour.

JDW, Rochester. A dark smoky beer. Tar is the dominant association. Its a great beer to accompany a cooked breakfast. Because of the assertive nature of the flavour, a full pint can be a bit heavy.

Cask (JDW, Victoria Station, London) - Dark brown with some red tinges. Coffee, chocolate and liquorice in the aroma. Roasted taste with malt, coffee and plain chocolate detected. The finish is very roasted and lingers for quite a while.
