3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 MartinT (6340) - Montreal, - SEP 13, 2006
Any first impressions?
-A ring of foam decorates the clear amber.
-Creamy maltiness delves into a biscuity character, as earthy oranges rise from the aromatic hops.
-Piney, wooden hops are well-organized in the flavor profile with the caramel sweetness.
-The cushiony mouthfeel even becomes creamy after a while, spelling nourishment.
What if you dig deeper?
-The patient wooden hop bitterness stays a while before disappearing.
-Would there be a semblance of balance in this Double IPA? Okay then!
-This is a mild Double IPA considering its West Coast origins, but this doesn’t take anything away from its solid structure and flavorful display.
Bottle; 2006 vintage.

Sep 06. Courtesy of Pailhead. Amber-orange, with average head, fades to ring. Aroma has tons of caramel and toffee, faint hops, slight oxidation already. Flavor again huge caramel, tons of oxidation, paper. Aged bw through and through.

A: Pours a nice deep copper color. There was very little head to speak of and little to no bubbles. There are lots of floaters in the glass, and despite its thick appearance there is no lacing seen.
S: For a DIPA this beer has a very mild aroma. There is a definite sweet aroma coming from the glass kind which reminds me of the yeasty sweetness of rising bread dough. There are also hints of pine and grapefruit but not much, the sweet smell is what stands out to me.
T: This one starts off pretty sweet as it splashes across my tongue. Then the taste of bitter grapefruit kicks in. The taste of hops is noted, but it’s not what you would expect for a DIPA. This beer is balanced like a nice IPA instead of its big brother the DIPA. It is not over the top in any way shape or form.
M: Medium bodied with an almost syrupy quality. It sticks to your mouth and flows down the throat. Thank god this one has a nice taste because it really lingers.

An old bottle pours hazy orange with chunkies floating around in it. Aroma is strong hop, alcohol, and malt. Taste is toffee, bitter pine, almost like a barley-wine in it’s alcohol content and flavor. Slightly boozy but not bad.

Bottle shared. Poured copper amber with a nice white head, little lace. Aroma of resinous hops, big malt, light booze. Taste is pretty hoppy considering the age. Some mild booze as well. Malt makes this really sweet. Finish is warming. Overall, a good aged IIPA.

Pours a hazy amber with some golden notes towards the top, some floaters. Beautiful beer. Aroma of resiny hops, booze, caramel malts, citrus. Similar taste, very boozy, drinking a 2006 bottle so very strong. Cheers
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Butters (3013) - Richmond, Virginia, USA - SEP 3, 2009
Bomber shared at Scottyp’s housewarming tasting. Pours a beautiful very hazy burnt orange with decent foamy offwhite head with spotty lacing. Nose of sweet old mellowed floral hops, honey, and mellow alcohol, but no burn. Flavor is sweet hop resin, with an enjoyable booziness. Despite having 3 years of age, this is still a really enjoyable beer. I’m really digging this.

Thanks Butters. Fading ring of beige head with a burnt orange body full of white particulates. Aromas of resin, sticky, mellow hops. Flavor is resin, pine, caramel. Reminds me of a barley wine. Alcohol stands out.

had it once a while ago. It was to green for me. After I finished it I remember thinking I wouldn’t want it again.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy orange amber color with a medium creamy yellowish beige head. Some floaties are present. The aroma has a candy like sweetness, a big dose of caramel malts, and big citrus hops. The flavor has a big caramel malt presence accompanied by some fruits and more sweetness. The hops are there but have probably faded a bit. Orange citrus is at the forefront with hints of pine and floral around as well. Full bodied, viscous, and warming as it goes down. I would have liked to have had this fresh to compare.

Bottle. Picked up at the Bottleworks. Pours a cloudy amber orange with a frothy off white head. Lots of hops to the nose. Grapefruit and floral aroma. Very sweet entry. Tart tangerine, grapefruit, caramel malts. A nice bitter finish. Very good!
