Itís been about 15 months since I purchased the bottle. I donít know if itís significantly worse fresh, but this is a big, rich barleywine at this point and itís quite nice. The beer is a pretty standard red-tinged amber with a small head fading to a bit of lacing. The aroma is particularly good - vanilla, caramel malt, a touch of lingering citric hops, cognac around the edges and an almost koelsch-like vinous quality. The grape aroma is all sweet, little champagne grapes and adds a lot. The flavor has that silky, smooth sweetness of residual sugars that have slowly oxidized. The mouthfeel could be a touch creamier but itís still good. Itís really quite nice at this point. I almost want to try a fresh bottle to understand some of the lower scores. Iím not sure why this beer would rate lower than Old Guardian or Green Flashís barleywine.

Deep red color with a white head. Decent lacing. Malt first type of barley wine with a nose of dark fruits. What holds this one back is itís lack of flavor up front other than a caramel sweetness and itís harsh alcohol finish.

Bottle. Reddish amber pour with very little beige head. Aroma is vanilla tobacco and rich dark fruit / fig. Sort of acidic palate, but good dark fruit / fig flavor. Vanilla tobacco undertones in flavor and mild alcohol and bittering hops in the finish. Better than I thought it would be.

On draught at Baileyís Taproom CellarFest 2013. 2007 vintage. Not sure if itís been aged too long, but it is more bitter and not as satisfying as other barleywines. OK overall though.

Very pungent malty aroma. Not a bad aroma. A big haze look with this beer. Not much head on it. Whoa, a very strong taste of alcohol. I generally like some malt with my alcohol, but the alcohol just blasts my tongue. It doesnít have a horrible taste, but it is not good. I just think the alcohol taste is not hidden at all. I have had strong barley wines, with 12+ abv, but there were other flavors. This one just has an alcohol bitterness, not even a hop bitterness. I just think they missed when it came to using hops and malts.

This beer completely lives up to its name. Phenolic nose with notes of rotten fruit and artificial sweetener. Sweet and oxidized palate with some burnt toffee and spruce tips. Sickening sweet high alcohol finish.

Pours hazy mahogany red with a decent head that left a strong film and ok lacing. Aromas of spices, caramel, brown sugar and apple. Taste is maltiness for the most part, but plenty of carmelized sugar and alcohol as well. Hops come in a bit at the end. Nice beer, but the alcohol is strong, and I’m thirsty.

Bottled. Beer is clear medium caramel-brown colored. The head is small, white, frothy, mostly and quickly diminishing, but ultimately lasting.<P>First impression on the nose is more like an IIPA. The aroma is malty with moderate notes of toasted bread, caramel and biscuit; Hoppy with light/moderate notes of resin/pine, moderate/heavy grassy herbal; Yeasty with a light note of basement, trace of dish rag; Light notes of alcohol and candy sugar, trace of grains of paradise.<P>The flavor is rich. Moderately/heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter with a long, warm, moderately sweet, light/moderately bitter finish. Trace of astringency on the gums. Bready rets and long-lasting grip.<P>The body is medium/full, the texture is velvety/syrupy and the carbonation is lively.<P>Not bad, not super.

Pours a medium copper with thin head. Taste is caramel malts and dark fruit. Light floral hops comes through, and it finishes with a big lingering bitterness. Significant alcohol burn comes through. This could even out nicely in a year or so, but right now it was just a bit muddled.

22oz bottle. Pours hazy amber with a light off white wispy head. Sweet orange/nectarine aroma with caramel, candy, and red licorice. There is also a touch of something alcoholic. Lots of malt caramel in the flavor. This is a fairly sweet brew. Tons of orange character also. Impressively so, really. Just a bit of orange rind like flavors as well. Syrupy mouth feel with a semi-bitter finish. Good, but overloaded with orange and caramel to the point that itís a bit much.
