This stout beer pays tribute to the Butternuts Brewery’s former life as a dairy farm. It’s a more drinkable version of the Stout breed than its heavy, boorish and smelly European sisters. We use lactose sugar for body and mouthfeel; not too strong, not too viscous at 4.9% abv. Unlike a true bovine it has a malty, roasty aroma and a dry finish but no tail or teats, and leaves no unsightly cow pies laying around the yard for you to step in.

Can. Roasty, metallic with a little lactic sweetness. Drinkable but that's about it.

UPDATED: FEB 7, 2015 Pours dark brown with light head and little lacing. Smells of toffy and malt. Light on the tongue, but decent roasted flavors linger with no discernable alcohol. Very tasty despite abysmal rating to-date here on RB.

A nice milk stout, a bit thin. Pours a beautiful deep black with a white head. Smells of cocoa. Taste is milk off the bat, with more cocoa in the finish. Tasted at the BevMo Holiday Beer Fest.

Pour from can. Dark pour, foamy brown head. Roasty aroma. Medium carbonation, roasted malt flavor, some creamy smoothness from lactose. This is not malty, boozy, or chocolatey. This stout hits the mark dead on, for what it is set out to be (a roasty, malty beer, that is heavy in pigmentation only). ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ca. Easily the best of the sampler pack. Pours a dark cola like colour, extremely light brown head with tiny lace spots. Nose is light malty. Tastes sweet, roast malt, a touch of chocolate, a bit of bitterness.

Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance- The beer pours a black/deep brown color with a one finger off-white head of foam. The head has a great level of retention, slowly fading to leave a great level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a sweeter caramel and milk chocolate smell with nice notes of crème. Along with these smells comes a lighter coffee aromas and a decent showing of a roasted smell. Taste – The taste starts out drier then would have been anticipated for a milk stout but not too dry. It starts with a rather strong roasted malt flavor with a moderate showing of caramel and sweeter milk chocolate flavors. These sweeter flavors lose a bit of ground more toward the end but are replaced by a bit more roastedness and a little more dark chocolate and coffee. With all the transitions and tastes that occur, leaving a rather rich (for a stout of only 4.9 % abv) roasted and moderately sweetened dark flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the lighter to average side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly higher side. Both are rather nice for the mix of roasted and sweeter flavors of the brew and create a nice base for the flavors to be well sensed, all while still maintaining the easy drinking feel. Overall- A rather tasty, somewhat, but not overly, drier-milk stout, which packs a whole lot of flavor into a little bit of abv. This is a rather nice more winter style, sessionable brew.

In the can @ home. I thought this was from Secret Krampus but honestly, it probably came from BoostIPA. Either way, thanks! Pours a deep brown appearance with a pretty nice sized dark brown head. Milk sugar, dark chocolate, some roast, and coconut in the aroma. Light mouth feel. A touch of metal. Coconut / vanilla milk flavor. Moderately high sweetneess and bitterness. Kind of a bland, grassy hop bitterness. Not all that good but it could be worse. Not sure what the "farmhouse" in the name is all about.
