COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This stout beer pays tribute to the Butternuts Breweryís former life as a dairy farm. Itís a more drinkable version of the Stout breed than its heavy, boorish and smelly European sisters. We use lactose sugar for body and mouthfeel; not too strong, not too viscous at 4.9% abv. Unlike a true bovine it has a malty, roasty aroma and a dry finish but no tail or teats, and leaves no unsightly cow pies laying around the yard for you to step in.

this is my favorite session stout! i just discovered the six packs of cans of this stuff at yankee spirits in South Attleboro, Ma, and i was very pleasantly surprised when i drank it. very dark, nice and foamy.....thick (but not too thick), sweet, malty, chocolate/coffee/caramel aromas, cocoa and coffee flavor, high malt, low hop....as far as iím concerned, there has never been a better "session strength" sweet stout!

12 oz can. Pours a nice black with a thin white head. Smells of chocolate. Taste is very sweet milk chocolate, cocoa. Body is average, carbonation is average too. Very simple, yet very enjoyable beer. Canít understand why its rating is so low.

No canning information.
Appearance: Black body throughout with a creamy brown head, average retention but dissolves into a light coating with a thick creamy ring.
Aroma: Sweet cocoa with roasted malts are strong on the first smell, but a light smoky aroma appears giving a light smoked meats aroma. Great aroma.
Taste: The taste isnít as strong as the flavor but roasted malts come in on the mid-taste after a bland intro, which then hints at cocoa and a light smoky flavor on the finish. This has a nice amount of flavor, especially for the ABV and has nice complexity. I really enjoy this.
Palate: Light to medium bodied, with medium amounts of carbonation.
Overall: This is a hell of a value and it really surprised me. I will be buying a case of this for the rest of winter as my go-to. I highly recommend this and I would love to try this with some smoked ribs or a hamburger.

12 oz can purchased at the brewery in Garrattsville, NY. Pours to a deep brown, to black color, with a soapy white head that fades, and a good carbonation. The nose is very inviting on this beer, with good aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, and light roast. The palate is soft, with good dark chocolate, dark malt, and coffee flavor. This beer finishes with more good chocolate and coffee flavors up front, then ends with a mild hop bitterness that lingers. Another well done, flavorful, yet very drinkable beer. A good beer to have a session with, and a good beer to match with a number of dishes, from bbq to deserts.

Guys, itís a milk stout. Itís not a imperial porter, the hops are supposed to be subtle, the color is supposed to be dark dark brown and not a true black, roasted malt is apropos. If you wanted an imperial stout or a double porter, you should have bought one. I wanted this for hot summer days and Iím going to finish this 6-pack and then buy a case!

smell is sweet malt - chocolate and coffee. Flavor is more of the same. Im clearly malt fan as I really like this. Nothing weird. A little of that licorice at the end with some carbonation that keeps it light. LOVE the can and art.

Pours a thick, milky look. Black with a brown tinge. No head. Brown film on top. About average. The smell is of sweet raisin, black licorice. Not burnt or bitter. Sweet and even a little sour ... in a good way. Slightly roasted stout flavors. Some sour raisin as well; nice malt character. Tart in the sweet raisiny taste. Very pleasant. Toffee, caramel & molasses as it warms up. Feels milky smooth. A little bubbly too. Really nice feel to this beer. Itís a good, drinkable stout. Mild, sweet and pleasant.

12oz can. Mixed 12pk. Label has a leaping cow on it. Pack date 06/15/2009. Pours a solid black, with a light tan head. Yum yum give me some. Aroma of black patent, burnt malts, deep roasted grains and a bit of licorice. Flavor is very roasty and extremely burnt. Taste of a deep french roasted coffee been. Fresh as fresh could be, I love these cans. Whoo-wee these beers from Butternuts are good. Fresh. Medium-heavy bodied. Light carbonation. perfect. 18 july 09 8,5,7,4,15

Can. Poured black with a good creamy head. Faint chocolate malt aroma. The beginning is a little thin for a stout but ends well with a roasted bitter taste to be expected from a stout. This is the first Butternuts beer Iíve had and was impressed. I wasnít sure what to expect from a can and the price was reasonable.

This is probably the most fun design I have ever seen on a can. Had a 12 pack about a year ago, and wasnít taking notes at the time. Pours a nearly opaque black with a small off-white head. Taste was malty with a good touch of sweetness to it for a stout. Bitter, but not overly so. Overall a solid beer, but not one that I ever cared to have again.
