Black Rocks is a Black IPA. It is very dark in colour, yet has many characteristics of an India Pale Ale. Late mash additions provide the colour without the harsher, roasted flavours of the dark malts. The beer has a blackcurrant aroma and flavours of liquorice and pithy grapefruit

Bottle, 10C. Black with an inch of beige head. Aroma of gooseberries, grass clippings, mocha, dark berries. Carbonation is fairly high, body is medium. Sweetish at first with lots of Kiwi tropical and grassy notes, grapefruit, some dark sugars. Dryish, fairly bitter and a tad ashy at the end. Vibrant and cheerful.

Appearance: dark brown, or almost black with a medium sized tan head that stays very long. Nice lacing. I don’t like the sediment floating in the glass throughout drinking. Aroma: not very intense, with hints of roastiness and tropical fruits. Imperial Black from Buxton had much better aroma than this one. Taste: I’m not sure, but I think something’s wrong here. This doesn’t taste like an american black ale. It lacks the hoppiness, instead there’s a lot of roastiness and coffee plus that burnt aftertaste plus medium but lasting and rather unpleasant bitterness. Dry finish. Mouthfeel: medium bodied, low carbonation. Overall: not a bad beer, but I guess this wasn’t the best batch. Bottled on 7-01-2014. Well, I’ll try this one again, but not any time soon.

The aroma is great, some fruit which I could not specify, later on I’ve read that it’s blackcurrant - well maybe ;) but I like it, mixed with roasted malt aroma. Fruity taste.

Not as fresh as I would like, and the rating will suffer for it, but I think I wouldn’t have loved it regardless. Notes of grapefruit linger, but a bit on the char/ashy side of malt presence, less on the cocoa/semisweet side I’d prefer from a slightly faded Black IPA. I don’t know that I’d be a huge fan of this beer if it was a day old, based on the malt profile.

Pours black with almost no head. Aroma is roasted malts, tropical fruits, orange, cocoa nibs, brown sugar. Taste is peach, apricot, rye bread, a bit of roasted nuts, cocoa nibs and honey. Very good! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at Mane Liquor. Pours a black with a tanned head. Nose is quite milk chocolate and espresso forward with pine hops. Taste has more of the dry milk chocolate and espresso coming through. Pine and citrus come into the picture. Biscuit malt coating at the end. Pretty solid brew

330ml bottle from Beer Ritz. Has a lovely citrus aroma that hovers above the glass with a frosty freshness. Smooth, dark body with some lovely dark malts, a touch of grapefruit and a pinching bitterness on the finish, mellowing to a biscuity dryness. An exceptional beer.
