Black Rocks is a Black IPA. It is very dark in colour, yet has many characteristics of an India Pale Ale. Late mash additions provide the colour without the harsher, roasted flavours of the dark malts. The beer has a blackcurrant aroma and flavours of liquorice and pithy grapefruit

50 cl bottle @ Olutravintola Konttori, Tampere.
Pours hazy dark red-brown color with a medium head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, hops, grass, some caramel and dark fruits. Flavor of roasted malts, mild caramel, some citrus fruits and some goose berry and vegetable notes. Not at its prime anymore.

Aroma has vanilla. coffee and raspberries - very typical to black ipa. Flavour is odd with resiny hops, coffee, some chocolate and nettles. Finishes with vichy and cardboard. Perhaps a bit past its prime.

500mL bottle. Pours black with a very small white?.. head that is making it very hard to pull the aroma, slight piney tropical fruits. This beer has a very complex flavour, it has a pronounced citrus/grapefruit that is backed by a delicate, deep light roasted malt that compliments very well. The carbonation is lacking even for an IPA, i would love to try it at the brewery to compare. Alas this is a very nice beer.

Bottle, bought @ YNWA Beershop. Pours deep red to black with a lovely, medium, staying, creamy off-white head. Aroma has peach, caramel, soft chocolate, light dusty. A bit of liqourice. Medium carbonation, rather fat and creamy mouthfeel. Flavour has roasted malts, light metallic, quite some liqourice. Quite bitter finish. Not the most impressive from Buxton.

Black body, light brown head. Nice dark flowery aroma with dark fruity hops. Some citrus and medicinal notes too. Flavour is really ashty and dry. Bit thin on the palate. Stout and hop more than black IPA if there is a difference.

Bottle from Birratrovo, Como, bb Nov 2013
Black color with medium sized beige creamy head. The aroma is mild, but with some nice hops. The mouthfeel is quite smooth, the roasted malt flavor is mild, and there is a milky touch; correct bitterness, with some hop resins in the background; dry final.
Overall, a good balanced beer.

Bottle conditioned. Black beer with small head and good lacing. Aroma is grapefruit and maybe a touch of chocolate. The taste is excellent, chocolate, hops, some grapefruit in the finish and a little sweetness along the way. The palate is very smooth and full bodied. The only thing that lets this down is the lack of a decent head and maybe it could be a bit bigger in the ABV range.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Fest2013)
Gentle aromatic fruity hops, above a decent toast. Nearly black, ruby glints, small loose head. Lovely a dn smooth palate, carbonation low. More like a fresh hoppy porter than a real balck IPA. Pretty easy drinker, but full too. Good one!

Opaque black - brown beer with a tidy pale tan head. Dry palate. Dry dark malt, slightly bitter. Brief hit of orange citrus before bitter pine takes over. Dry finish. Okay if a bit dry. There are much better Black IPAs around.
