Cask - The Southampton Arms, Kentish Town, London. Poured with minimal head - just an island & ring of light tan bubbles - on a deep brown coloured body. Coffee & cocoa powder aromas with a dense hop presence shining through. Lively hop & choccy malt interplay on the palate with some light roasty, coffee notes towards the finish. Medium body, soft palate texture & a lingering bittersweet, moderately dry malty finish. Has a wondrous drinkability about it despite it’s fairly hefty ABV.

bottle. black. initially a very, nice grapefruity citrus, fresh currants and gooseberries, hoppy bouquet, which actually lasts for a while. turns piny though, and roasty. full bodied, smooth. roasted malts, licorice. dark berries, violets. with the lingering fruity citrus in the finish. drinkable and nice. a bit too clean almost.

At a tasting, thanks kerenmk, very dark brown colour, flavour of ash, wood, grapefruit and a hint of dark bread, fruity flavour with some smoked meat, strong characterfull bitterness. Very enjoyable and highly original.

Very dark brown, a to small head. Good citrus hoppy, some caramel, roasted coffee. To warm served, and that ruins it a bit, i think, but still, a very nice brew, small surprise for me.

[Cask at Reading BF] Deep brown-black with a moderate cream head. Lots of pine and good pithy grapefruit perfectly balanced with sweet chocolate and a moderate roast. Great black IPA, yum! c10

Bottle@Home. Very grassy, light herbal aroma. Black, beige head, good lace. Light malty, very bitter, roasted, hint of chocolate, herbal, grainy finish. Medium body, dry. Well made but too much of the grass and bitter for me.

A black beer with a medium, creamy and beige head. Aroma is balanced, citrusfruits and liquirice. Taste is roasted, balanced, citrusfruits, coffee and grapefruity sourness, aftertaste is dry and even burned, herbs. Medium bodied, smooth carbonation. Strongly roasted, but balanced, citrusfruity beer.

Bottle. Black beer with off white medium head. Aroma is very hoppy and pine. Taste is hops, pine, roasted malts, coffee, citrus and a touch of bitter chocolate. Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. A very nice black IPA. I do prefer the Buxton Black Rocks slightly more though.
