UPDATED: MAY 12, 2013 Bottle at home, from Bitter Virtue, 11/05/13. Pours a murky dark amber with a thin off white head that dissipates to a swirl. Nose is bitter orange, light boozey notes, caramel malt, sugars, tropical fruits, pine. Taste comprises mineral notes, juicy hops, dank orange, boozey notes, caramel mal, candied sugarst. Fullish bodied with fine carbonation - well pitched keeping it drinkable, boozey finish. Ok DIPA - once criticism is that it’s a little over boozey, balance needs tweaking a touch.

Draught at Jerntorgets Brygghus, Göteborg, on May 7, 2013.
Cloudy yellow color, fluffy white head. Hoppy, citrus, cheese scent. Hoppy, bitter, resin, alcohol taste. Warming alcohol. Medium mouthfeel, medium high bitterness.
OK, but nothing I’ll crave more for much.

Really hoppy DIPA with long bitterness and fresh fruity aromas. Buxton have made it again!

On tap at Man in the Moon, pours a cloudy, opaque dusty orange with a medium off-white head. Aroma brings out loads of fresh tropical fruits (peaches, mangos and oranges), boatloads of resinous hops, some bitter grapefruit peel, and some caramel malts. Flavour is very similar, with truckloads of resinous hops, bitter grapefruit, tropical fruits galore (mangos and peaches), and just enough dry caramel malt to balance. Exceptionally well-balanced, with an excellent bitterness and super fruity and dry mouthfeel. Loads of flavour, that lingers on and on. Excellent stuff.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines. Smells awesome. Taste is aggressively bitter, with tropical, pepper and marmalade notes. Rather harsh on the finish - tastes burnt. With a fruitier or boozer finish this would have even better. Perhaps I should have drinken it quicker.

Cold bottle. Smells a bit like the Axe Edge. Up front flavour is sickly sweet, intense, floral and piney. Finish of washing up liquid and a soft enduring bitterness. Floral flavours stick around for a while. Not as bitter as I was expecting.

Super hazy soupy amber with light cream head. Subtle mango and passion fruit nose. heavy body, light carbonation, slightly boozy at first then the hop flavours come through. Is it unfined or a duff bottle? At least Buxton yeast fairly flavour neutral but the hop hit I was expecting from axe edge was missed. Tastes ok but not up to usual high standard. Disappointed :(

What’s your opinion on the Flying V? James Hetfield is playing one now and it sounds good. Jimi played one at Isle of Wight. Can’t fault Jimi in any way (sure Pebbles would though). I’m more a fan of the rickenbacker but that’s my mod roots I guess. Love a telecaster as well, as regular readers will know. I watched a film about The Pixies a while back. Kim Deal, man, she confuses me. I adore her, but I’m not sure why. I need sleep.

[keg at the Hanging Bat, Edinburgh] Hazy deep, dark bronze colour. Decent white head. The aroma is largely caramel-led, with some marzipan. Flavours are bitter caramel, with a long dry, earthy, tannin finish, that ends almost as bitter as tobacco. Love that finish (although I hate tobacco, it’s a flavour that works really well in Double IPA’s). Great beer [06032013]

Light caramel malts, not overpowering. But the bitterness afters probably are. Balance them out with more fruitiness and this would rock.
