Tsar is rich and powerful, a full bodied Imperial Stout. Malty chocolate, mocha and dark berry fruit-notes preside over a subtle hop profile, whilst a smooth velvety texture in the mouth gives way to a lingering bitter, dark chocolate finish

330ml bottle at home. Pours jet black with a long-lasting tan head. Aromas of red fruit, dark chocolate, black coffee. Taste is roasted bitter, more red fruit, smoke coming through, charcoal maybe. Oily mouthfeel, medium body. Long, long finish. Mmmm.

Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle (thanks voncrease). Poured black, with a big, dense tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and peat. Mouthfeel was medium to full, but not as thick as I’d like for an impy stout. Sweet flavours of vanilla, mixed with bitter dark chocolate and burnt malt. Finish was quite bitter, with espresso, rye bread and dark fruit.

Very black pour with almost no head, but what there is is a deep toffee colour. The nose is full of licorice, dark chocolate, espresso and dark fruit. The licorice and coffee dominate the finish but there’s some lighter flavours on the entry, Full bodied and a little gritty with a smooth warmth and long finish. I can dig it.

33cl bottle from April’14. Aroma of garden rose, dark roasted malts and caramel. Pours pitch black with dark brown to black-gray head. Malty, chocolaty and yet hoppy and yeasty. A magical mix for a imperial stout. Enjoyable over an hour. Texture changes from heavy and creamy to slick and slimy, but that is what you expect. Full bodied beer. Try to beat that. Again, this is something that I was not expecting. Perfect beer for its style. Get it if you are a stouts fan.

Pours black with a thick, tan head. Aromas of molasses, toast, vanilla, malt, antiseptic, and alcohol. Taste of antiseptic bitter, with a less than pleasant bitter, charcoal finish. Full bodied, with a fizzy carbonation. It’s alright, I guess. May have been tainted.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with thick, average to huge, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, tan head. Surprising aroma has notes of woodruff, mint, aniseed, sweat and smelly feet, hardly detectable minimally roasty, dark malty background. Taste is dry, unpleasantly extremely bitter, roasty dark malty, soapy, herbal, a touch of lavender, woodruff, aniseed, peppermint and eucalyptus, metallic as well, very subtle dark malty hints of coffee. I’m baffled: oxidised hops? Kind of far out.

Bottle at home. Pours dense dark brown black with a tan head. Aroma is milk choc, candy, light veg funk... Medium body, light to medium carbonation. Soy, treacly sweetness, light booze, meat, bitter coffee, well balanced and there is some hoppy, lemony grassiness too. Good.

330 ml bottle from Premier Wine and Spirits. Pours a rich, nearly black colour with small but lasting, creamy brown head. Aroma is rich cocoa, anise, some coffee and fruit. Flavour is very roasty with lots of coffee, some licorice, some cocoa and hints of dark fruit. Very fine carbonation. Nice one.
