Tsar is rich and powerful, a full bodied Imperial Stout. Malty chocolate, mocha and dark berry fruit-notes preside over a subtle hop profile, whilst a smooth velvety texture in the mouth gives way to a lingering bitter, dark chocolate finish

Bottle @ home. The pour’s thick, oily black with a tight, creamy tan head. Attractive. The nose is strong sweet Hershey’s chocolate syrup, charred malts, espresso bean, booze-infused fudge and bitter dark chocolate. Big, expressive aromas. The taste is similarly outsized. Heavy notes of freshly ground espresso. Charred wood and gritty roasted malt flavors. Big, fat, thick chocolate milkshake. Dry, hoppy bitter finish. Ashy. The body’s thick and viscous. Luxurious mouthfeel. This beer wears the ABV well, though it certainly demands to be drunk at a leisurely pace. Overall, pretty outstanding. I feel like I’ve cheated myself by waiting this long to try this beer. It’s great. If this was made by a hip US brewery it’d have a huge reputation.

My Bottom Line:
This bitter Imperial Stout shares a wealth of dark malt flavors from dark chocolate to coffee and charred meats, all in a lush mouthfeel.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A dollop of foam covers the pure darkness.
-The mouthfeel isn’t too heavy or syrupy at all due to fine carbonation.
-The roasted malt bitterness might scare away some, but I’m liking it a lot.
-That nose is something else. And there are no adjuncts in this Impy! Unadulterated malty goodness.
-Green hoppiness manages to seep through the glorious dark malts in the finish.
-The fruitiness of a few black grapes is found here and there.
-Alcohol is very well hidden under all that malt and bitterness.

Dark chocolate and coffee in aroma. Pours pitch black with beige head. Taste is dry, roasty, coffee, chocolate, liquorice. Oily texture. Finish is medium bitter, alcohol perfectly hidden. Overall great example of classic Impy.

Keg at The Buxton Brewery Tap House. A black colour with a frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, some raisin, slight red berries, subtle liquorice and biscuit. Taste of roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, some liquorice, raisin and other dried fruits, subtle spice and cocoa. Full bodied and soft carbonation. A dark chocolate finish with roasted coffee bitterness in the aftertaste. Like all imperial stouts I’ve had from Buxton, it’s full bodied, creamy, full and powerfully flavoured. Bitter, sweet and wonderfully complex. Lovely chocolate and toasty aroma and flavour.

Black pour, dense tan head. Nose is roasty coffee with a definite note of esters from the yeast. Flavor is rich and complex. Bittersweet baker’s chocolate, coffee, and yeast dominate. Little to no hop character. Thick mouthfeel. Very nice. On tap at the Holy Grale, Louisville.

330ml bottle enjoyed @ home. Pours pitch black with a creamy light brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, lots of coffee, hops, chocolate, vanilla and earthy. Flavour is medium bitter and light sweet. Full bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Finish is roasted, bitter and warming alcohol.

Another great Buxton beer. Dark with a lasting tan coloured head. Thick creamy body. Aroma has some whisky notes - a bit peaty with some soy sauce. Flavour has dark malts and chocolate, with just a hint of berries.

Black with a thin brown head. Cocoa, coffee, bitter hops. Low sweet with a long dry, very roasted and very bitter finish. Soft carbonation, smooth palate. Very nicely done but this is not for me. The very roasted bitter hoppy character makes it almost an ordeal to sip.

Pours black with a good mocha head that fades pretty quickly into a thick lace. Nice aromas of chocolate with some berries and something perfumey. Big silky and rich body, low carbonation, velvety smooth, deep rich pure cacao taste with a good lingering bitterness, ending on a citrus peel note mixed with raw cocoa and finally, roastiness. Long bitter finish. Super nice RIS!

(bottle 330ml) Aroma: very hoppy aroma( mainly citrusy and floral notes), weak hints of coffee and chocolate in the back, just a pinch of dark fruits cobined with alcochol.- it smells more like black ipa. Appearance: jet black, quite clear, medium-size, long-lasting ,yellowish head with decent lacing. Taste: Dry,verry hoppy, dark malt flavours are coverd by citrussnes citrusy and roasty finish, loooong bitter aftertaste. Palate: medium-full to full body, medium carboantion ,chewy oily texture. Overall: Not my kind of imperial stout it astes more like imperial black IPA .

Barwa czarna, smolista, nieprzejrzysta, gęsta już na pierwszy rzut oka. Sporo drobinek chmielowych. Piana skąpa, ale zwarta i drobnopęcherzykowa. Aromat słodowy, słodki, ciemne owoce, konkretnie palone, kawa i odrobineczka czekolady. Bomba. W smaku jest gorzka czekolada i lekko kwaskowa kawa, goryczka, ciemne owoce, jeżyny. Wszystko okraszone odrobina lekko rozgrzewającego alkoholu. Wysycenie średnie, pełne, oleiste, aksamitnie wchodzące, goryczka średnia w stronę wysokiej z owocowo, czekoladowo, alkoholowym finiszem.
