4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle @ home. The pour’s thick, oily black with a tight, creamy tan head. Attractive. The nose is strong sweet Hershey’s chocolate syrup, charred malts, espresso bean, booze-infused fudge and bitter dark chocolate. Big, expressive aromas. The taste is similarly outsized. Heavy notes of freshly ground espresso. Charred wood and gritty roasted malt flavors. Big, fat, thick chocolate milkshake. Dry, hoppy bitter finish. Ashy. The body’s thick and viscous. Luxurious mouthfeel. This beer wears the ABV well, though it certainly demands to be drunk at a leisurely pace. Overall, pretty outstanding. I feel like I’ve cheated myself by waiting this long to try this beer. It’s great. If this was made by a hip US brewery it’d have a huge reputation.

Has a sort of sticky molasses flavor going on that detracts. A little sweet, with some mild cocoa notes, but I cannot get over the sort of meaty character it has. Not terrible but not my favorite.

3.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Nose is really heavy salt and soy sauce, there’s some roast and chocolate but they’re only perceptible if everything else gets out of the way. Sweet with a touch of yeast. Pours dark brown-black with ruby highlights showing under the bottom edge, with a creamy light brown head. Watery-light body is yeasty and creamy in the mouth, moderately dry with light bitterness, perhaps a bit more depending on the mood, flavors given over to gentle rolled roast and a bit of subdued chocolate. Red and purple berries in small measure with resolution to a pleasant neutral yeast. Actually strikes a pretty good balance! Velvety feel (flatness is no insult!) is perhaps this offering’s best asset, there’s some alcohol showing but nothing unbecoming, and all things considered there’s a meekness here I find very attractive, though mildness is too often frowned upon in my native land. I’d down several pints if given the chance, though my eyes could read the danger.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled Aug 2013 at 9.5%, into tulip. A pretty thick black pour, forms a small tan head which doesn’t endure. Smell - chocolate, yeast, vanilla. Alcohol comes through a bit. Body is medium, a bit on the foamy side, low carbonation. Taste - lots of liquorice and molasses to start, background vanilla and coffee, a hint of orangey hops. Good stuff.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Easy Rich tan head. Leaves waves of froth and lacing inside the glass. Deep roast and spice on the nose with seemingly damp concrete. Almost full bodies on the tongue but not at all sappy. Light spice on the tongue on top of a one silky chewy earth and black chocolate. Great balance and well woven together.

UPDATED: FEB 25, 2014 Bottle from Buxton Tap. Black with a good creamy-bubbly head. Rich, hoppy, with some syrupy, roasted notes, incredibly smooth for the alcohol content. Tasty as well as smooth, good body with a dry aftertaste. Boozy pine hops aroma. Pretty good - though not top echelon.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, bottled Aug 2013.
Pours practically black with a small, mocha-colored head, mostly a ring of bubbles on the sides. Aroma is roast, a lot of chocolate. Some liquorice, a bit salty, a bit coffee. Taste is roasted, somewhat coffee, somewhat grapefruit. Very rich in flavor. Light sour and light chocolate. Full and quite carbonated, but not too much. Dangerously drinkable. Excellent.
