500ml Bottle - Hazy gold, almost like a wheat beer, with a foamy head. Pineapple, grapefruit, lemon and pine feature in the enticing aroma. Tangy, hoppy and full-bodied taste with notes of grapefruit, pine and some slightly soapy hints. Really refreshing, enjoyable and tasty. Impressive.

Bottle. Hazy golden amber with decent white head. Big hoppy aroma, heavy pine, peach and grapefruit. Similar taste, peachy, slight caramel and biscuity malt. Palate is spot on, creamy smooth mouthfeel and a perfect bitter finish. Delish

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Deep gold, with a slight hop haze, slick of a white head, and touch of carbonation. Flora hop arms with sweet, apricot and tangerine fruit. Flavour had biscuity malts, planet more fruit and gently dry finish. An excellent beer.

American IPAs have captured the attention of the world beer scene, so it comes as no surprise that other countries attempt to imitate our beers. I don’t think there’s any question that Wild Boar IPA by the Buxton Brewery out of England is indeed an attempt to capture on that apparently worldwide fascination with hoppy beers.

I received a 500ml bottle from the Buxton Brewery. I poured it into a tulip glass.

Appearance: Bright orange, although a lighter hue almost bordering on yellow. Mostly clear with a slight haze. Forms a large, white, frothy head which retains and laces very well.

Smell: Almost all orange all the time. Orange fruit, peel, pith and an orange sherbet-like sweetness all dominate the palate. A light floral character as well, but mostly it’s citrus.

Taste: What’s interesting about Wild Boar IPA is that although it is bitter, it’s still a little lighter than the average American brew in the style might be. It starts out with slightly sharp, slight dry bitterness and then immediately transitions to orange flavors. Orange fruit flesh and slight candy notes like Sweet Tarts are the prominent flavors here.

The caveat lies in the fact this beer isn’t as big as most American brews of the style I’m used to, so the flavors are familiar, but the intensity is not. The orange notes definitely seem authentic, but the energy level is toned down, maybe a bit too much. Sure it’s plenty bitter but I’d estimate the IBUs at 40-50. It’s a well-restrained IPA which makes it quite versatile. Overall, I’d describe it as good, nothing more - nothing less.

Drinkability: At only 5.7% ABV, Wild Boar IPA is quite light in body for the style. It’s also lighter in the palate than you might expect. The mouthfeel is noticeable thin, cold, and tepid. Plenty of flavor while in the mouth, and it’s actually quite refreshing at the peak of the swig. An easy beer to drink as it goes down quite smooth, although there is noticeable dryness in the aftertaste (but easily tolerable).

Bottle at home, 18th February2012. Lovely aroma pours to produce a nice looking glass of beer, taste is very pleasant perfect carbonation. I liked this, but I prefer the Axe Edge, that has a fuller flavour all around. Good beer though
