Ughsmash (2835), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Jul 20, 2008 Bottled. Poured clear deeper amber with lots of rising carbonation and a sticky, well-retained cap of beige head. The aroma picked up smoked ham hock and bacon upfront with a lovely dose of peat.. toasted caramel behind.. lacked the intensity of a Schlenkerla, but that wasn’t a problem here. The flavor had caramel maltage at the core with sour smoky peat and grassy bitterness surrounding.. a bit sharp and rough around the edges. Lighter-bodied with medium-plus carbonation on the palate.. creamy foray devolved to the rough back-end and final impression. Just OK. GAManiac (217), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Jun 11, 2008
Pours a dark brown with a small bubble head that dissipated quickly to a fine swirl on the top. It actually looks like iced tea when held up to the light. Smell is dominated by sweet malts with a bit of smoke in the aroma as well. The smoke is more of a compliment than a dominant smell. The taste reflects the aroma but I actually got a bit more of the hickory smoke in the taste, and in a good way. The mouthfeel is medium with a slightly bitter, woody finish. This is a very drinkable rauchbier due to the subtle nature of the smoke, though I wouldn’t put it at the top of my list of smoke beers. pantanap (677), Chicago, Illinois, USA Apr 27, 2008 bottle from brewery.... pours a semi-transparent light cola brown with a miky white head at the edges of the glass.... aroma of very light smoke and sweet malt...... very carbonated. flavor consisted mostly of lightly smoked charred malt with some tingly light bitterness in the finish. mgumby10 (1502), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Apr 3, 2008 Courtesy Dickinsonbeer. Pours a glowing amber maroon color, with a small off white head. Smells of smoke, sweet malts, and some dark fruit as well. Kind of got a little musty mildew trace in there also which threw it off for me. The flavor is pretty bitter, and the smoke and malt characters seem to be uneven at times. Just doesnt seem too much is focused here. Kind of artificial tasting. Disappointing effort. hopscotch (4386), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Mar 23, 2008 Bottle... Clear, deep amber brew with a small, fizzy, off-white head. The nose is of smoky caramel and rubber. Medium-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and standard carbonation. Well-balanced; smoky sweet and medium bitter. Finishes smoky and bitter. Thanks go out to mgumby10!
